POR/DAL trade – to solve roster imbalance for both team

Post#1 » by Michaellam1987 » Wed Jul 29, 2026 7:55 am

Sharpe (4 years 90M) + Henderson (expiring 13.6M)

For

Washington (4 years 88.8M) + Marshall (expiring 9.4M) + Sasser (expiring 5.2M)

Why for POR:

Turn surplus of Guards into experienced forward depth. More size, and more defense. Henderson can’t get enough touch/minutes playing after Lillard/Morant, and due for extension, and hence throw the extension problem to DAL. Sharpe is playing limited minutes since his return from injury, and change all these into much need forward depths. Sasser as third PG for occasional rotation minute, and round out the 15 men team roster.

Lillard/Holiday/Avdija/Camara/Clingan with Morant/Marshall/Washington/Willams III on the bench, IMO, is a competitive 9 men rotation in playoff.

Why for DAL:

Continue their semi rebuilding, and trade for players with same timeline as Flagg, but lack opportunities. Add perimeter scoring, and ball handling. Total of 11 players age 25 or lower now. 3 for 2 trade also bring down the team roster to 15.

No interest in including Marshall for that. There's an argument that Dallas is giving up the 2 best players in the deal, so youth does not even that out given Scoot has not shown much and expects to still get paid, and Sharpe is inefficient.

I’d do it for Dallas. Love both the players Dallas is sending out, but have to take the shot that Scoot could build off how he ended last season.

For Portland, I don’t see them doing it though. If I were them, I’d prefer to add to Sharpe in a different way to get the PJ swap done and keep Scoot’s upside.

Not interested in moving Scoot in that. Not really interested in Shaedon for PJ alone (for Shaedon's inefficiency, PJ was actually worse this year), let alone including Scoot for Naji and Sasser. Not a slight on Naji, he's a good player, but I still like Scoot's upside more (maybe foolishly) and Portland still needs perimeter shooting. All that trade does is make it worse.

I don't see Portland trading both Scoot and Sharpe. Unless they're really confident in Sasser being a quality rotation player they're left with 3 guards - 2 very old and 2 coming off of major injuries.

I don’t think Portland does this, but Naji would be mostly a two here imo.

Not trying to convince anyone of anything other than the fact that I would not base heavy opinions on last year for most of the Mavericks, including PJ.

I think Washington is historically inconsistent enough offensively I don't have any issues with Fitz on that. What I would point out is that scoring efficiency is paramount to Sharpe contributing to a team, its not to PJ who contributes in other ways. Washington still helps you if his scoring efficiency is below average, Sharpe can't.

Doesn't mean Fitz or anyone needs to want to swap them if they believe Sharpe has another level he's likely to reach. PJ is basically who he is. Better than Sharpe now, but some may see something in Sharpe?

This is my take as well.

The juice isn't worth the squeeze for Portland here.

I’m more hesitant on the including Scoot part, as that could turn around a bite, but I think I’d do it. Fills out the roster nicely by getting 2 forwards that really help while Sasser is some assurance for games missed by Dame/Ja/Holiday.

Yeah you're not wrong. PJ is currently the better all around player, and a better plug and play behind Deni/Toumani for the Blazers roster at the moment. I dont think the value is necessarily off with those 2. I just hope that if the Blazers give up on further improvement from Shaedon, they at least try and move him in a trade that brings back a shooter of some sort. Bringing back Dame is nice and all but swapping Grant for Ja only makes the Blazers need for shooting that much more glaring.

I don't think anyone can in good faith say that Sharpe and Scoot's issue is they haven't had the opportunity to show what they are about. Sharpe plays starter minutes and gets 17-18 shots per game. Scoot has always gotten 6th man minutes and also a good amount of on-ball/scoring reps. If Dallas wants them for some reason sure maybe it works out for them but they would not be trading for them under the theory that they are some hidden gems who never got minutes or the shots to show how good they are.
For the record I do not do this as Dallas because you are locking yourself into a situation where you have to give 2nd contracts to those guys.

Difference between Scoot and Sharpe is Scoot is a known hard worker and has shown some noticeable improvements. Sharpe just increases PPG as roster changes led to him getting more shots.

Trade seems overly complicated. The trade is a straight Sharpe/Washington swap, which patches some holes on both teams while creating new holes. Neither team should be excited or disappointed should that happen. Simple 4th/5th starter swap. "Washington is slightly better!" "Sharpe is younger!" "Washington is a better rebounder!" "Sharpe is a better scorer!" etc., etc.
