Follow up deal: Tre Mann + 2nd for AJ Johnson
Ill offer this idea for the Cavs to further get below 1st apron in lieu of trying to extend Harden and add 1 more UFA
To Memphis
-Tre Mann (1 year, $8 million plus TO)
-2032 Sacramento 2nd round pick
To Cleveland
-AJ Johnson (1 year, $3.2 million plus TO)
Why?
-Cavs keep trimming salary by another $4.8 million off the books to further maximize space under 1st apron in lieu of extending Harden
-Memphis leverage cap space while keeping its major TPE to land a 2nd.

I suggest the Bulls just absorb Mann, but we'd need to be compensated

Don't think Memphis reduces their Giant TPE and takes on 5 million for a single 2nd. Now if you want to use Murray or Russell as the outgoing salary where we don't have to use our TPE then something might be workable.

Yeah the Bulls should taking either Mann or Nnaji into their Room Exception. See which team is willing to pay more

They don’t need to use a TPE. They’re far enough under cap given Clarke deal is off books now.

AJ Johnson is the worst player in the NBA by BPM. He isn't getting traded for anything worthwhile, salary or not.

nothing worthwhile here. this is CLE clearing 4.8M with a 2nd round pick. Mann was also a bottom rung player in the league last year.
This is the move to make if you need that 4.8M to complete a deal for Watson or Kuminga or whoever. or you don't bother if you don't need it.
investigate Adam Silver

Couldn't Cleveland just stretch and waive Mann at this point, saving an additional $5.3M?
Well at least we're not Detroit!

He’s got a TO so the stretch goes to 5 years, around 1.6m/year if they want to go that route. Less if they secure a buyout price.

We are an over the cap team, we would have to waive our TPEs to use cap space. And have already used a good chunk of the MLE already on Post.

Big plus with Mann is that his 2027 deal is a TO, and we need a SG-not another forward.
But yes, these high salary teams will need relief. The calculation for Den to save was $35 million this year if the Bulls absorb Nnaji-that's A LOT of dough

Cavs wouldn’t give a second in that trade it’d either be straight up or you’d give us a full TPE for 2nd plus man

A single 2nd is not going to typical clear 8m of totally unwanted salary. Memphis would only be doing this for the asset, straight up makes zero sense for Memphis, but I am sure Cleveland would take it an instant.

Yes. We used the MLE on Post and everything else has been done via matching in Trades and TPEs. Even if we wanted or could make the Post signing a cap signing versus using the MLE we would still be just 4-5m below cap and have to waive all our TPEs. Makes no sense now to go under the cap.

I wouldn’t turn a 28 mil TPE into a 20 mil TPE just for a second.
I don’t know if (and honestly don’t think) Memphis does anything that makes turning the OP down worthwhile, but opp cost isn’t worth it to me.

Doesn’t Memphis have to cut like 3 players to get down to 15 standard contracts? I can’t see them adding salary without getting somewhat overcompensated

I thought we are still below 165m

We could have gone down a different route that would have still kept some cap space open but choose to keep the TPEs alive instead. Post could have been a room MLE signing but to do that we lose our TPEs. That route and if we release Gibson we could have been below the cap by some 18m right now (could have also not done the Russell dump too maybe netting us another 6M). Instead we are a above the cap team since we signed Post to the regular MLE and choose to keep our TPEs alive. So even though our salary total is below the Cap right now, we are an over the cap team.
We could have thrown 18m at Watson but likely a easy Denver match, so for him specifically going the cap space route wouldn't help us secure him imo. But if we hadn't got Russell then a 24m offer could have been on the table and likely a tough match for Den. But not even sure Watson is a target and no one else in FA imo was a great target....maybe could have got Eason.
