Clev-Chi, Bulls Mann Up

Post#1 » by pipfan » Sun Aug 16, 2026 7:05 pm

Simple-Mann to Chi, along with a 2030 pick swap option for the Bulls (not sure how much protection to give the Cavs)

If they want to add Watson or not and just resign Harden-this deal saves them a ton of $ and lux tax payments.

Bulls need a 2 guard to fill out their roster and preserves cap space for 2027. The pick swap might be useless, but by 2030 Harden will be long gone, Mitchell will be done as an impact player and the Cavs could be mediocre or worse.

What would the the protection be to make this fair?

I don't see any reason for Cleveland to do this. If Chicago wants Mann, they can have him, but a pick swap? That would be a terrible, terrible idea.

No reasons? Tax savings and apron space are not reasons anymore? A pick swap might be too much depending on the language but Cle for sure has reasons to get off Mann.

Cavs would just ship a 2nd or stretch him before giving up a pick swap 4 years out

The Cavs paid the Hornets $4M cash to trade Schroder for Mann rather an attach a second round pick. It seems wildly unrealistic to assume they send an unprotected swap to dump Mann's expiring, especially because that transaction alone doesn't land Watson.

I’m thinking unless Chicago signs Benedict, you’ll see something like Dalton Knecht (for example) and some amount of cash to Chicago for a fake draft pick or the rights to someone who was drafted in 2016

I don’t think Chicago gets much more offered than that as compensation for taking on whoever

I don’t see Cleveland trying to dump Manns salary and I don’t get why Chicago would want Tre Mann at $8 million

I didn't say unprotected-I asked what would the protection be. The $8 million in saving is HUGE to the Cavs, and if they could get Harden to sign for $30 million I think they could get out of the tax all together.

The Cavs don't care about getting out of the tax. They care about freeing up space to S&T for Watson (or possibly Kuminga). Overpaying the Bulls to dump $8M in expiring salary leaves them with fewer of their limited assets to do so. Strus still needs to get moved and Denver is going to want something as well.

If the Cavs just want tax savings they wait until the deadline, they just pay a team $4.5m to take the $3m or so left on Mann's salary for the last 30 games of the season. No need to make a move now.

The Cavs could also just waive & stretch Mann before the season starts.

Here's how I figure it
Cavs don't need Mann
The swap isn't unprotected
The savings would be $8 million in salary, plus A LOT more in lux tax
If they sign Harden at $30 and don't get Watson (not sure of the details on this idea) they avoid the tax, meaning they also get a payout (let's say it's $10 million in 2027)

So, the total savings are HUGE-for the price of a player they don't need and a swap (not saying unprotected, but Bulls would want some upside)

I believe the Cavs tax bill will be bigger due to the Repeater Tax (not sure), so this would be more savings AND they reset their tax history.

Seem like a good deal to me-but you Cav fans obviously know your team a lot better than I do so I could be totally wrong

The point is a swap is unrealistic for 8M savings it’s more like a second round pick

Thing is, it's A LOT more than $8 million. Once Harden resigns now, the Cavs will be VERY expensive again. Saving $8 million turns into probably around $35 million in cash savings for the Cavs

And that's for a pick swap-the Cavs would probably figure to be better than Chi still by then

The Cavs just turned Mann into a cheaper Whitmore for a second. They appear to be good with that result.

Just saw that-great deal for the Cavs, to add Whitmore over Mann and save $
