Like the value best for Denver, but directionally wrong.
Don't really like the fit of Watson with Mobley/Allen at the 4/5.

Gotta say, don’t love it for Denver. They are still above the second apron and a 2031 1st doesn’t unlock a bunch of new options or anything.

Re: Shams: Watson to CLE, Strus to LAC, picks to DEN
Solid return for the Nuggets imo
Question for the cap experts- what TPE does Denver create with this trade? I know BYC comes into play somehow since Watson was on a rookie contract before this. Do they get a TPE valued at 1/2 of Watson's 1st year, the entire Watson 1st year?
or was there a way to create a Strus sized TPE by making this "separate deals" where they apply BYC rules to trade Watson for Strus, and then they dump Strus for nothing?

They gotta get below the 2nd apron to send out a player in a sign and trade. Nnaji for Mann and they waive and stretch Mann?
Edit: asked Keith Smith on BlueSky and sounds like if you don’t take back salary you can still send a player out in the sign and trade.

Thought that is only to take in a player on a sign and trade, not send out?toooskies wrote:MoneyTalks41890 wrote:Gotta say, don’t love it for Denver. They are still above the second apron and a 2031 1st doesn’t unlock a bunch of new options or anything.

1) they dont get any tpe if they stay in 2nd apron
2) they cant match Watson alone for strus due to BYC, need to send out Nnaji too
3) TPE for watson would be 1/2 of the first year salary (see jerami grant to Detroit from years back.. 20M salary, 10M TPE created from BYC)

What’s in it for LAC . In a vacuum love the value for Denver and for Cleveland . But not sure if it’s directionally the right move for Denver and positionally the right fit for Cleveland.
Guess further moves are required .

Yup, good for him, good for everyone really. Denver got a bit more for him than I figured they would, since they're taking back 0 salary. I figured they could get a 1st and a 2nd if they took back a bad, small 2yr deal or something.
Some people really have a way with words. Other people... not... have... way.

The second apron restriction is on taking back any salary in a sign and trade. So Denver was kind of locked into this kind of deal.

so there's definitely more in store right? doesn't make sense to stay $2M into the second apron with all those restrictions

Cam J and the 2031 1st for someone making less is what makes the most sense to me. But that’s then most of the ammo.

Someone tell Jokic
he'll be so excited to hear how much tax they avoided. Maybe they can save this by signing Derozan for a vet min, otherwise tough to swallow.

Strus is a solid role player. If the timing is right for some team, they can get more for him than they gave up. If not, they can try and re-sign him at the end of the season

If Watson's 3pt shooting is real, i like it for Cleveland. If not, he very well could just be a worse player than Strus

I agree with you. I think the Clippers getting Strus is a nice prize for providing the space for the deal
I've got plenty of java and Chesterfield Kings

Possibly, but as much as I like Strus, he was playing out of position at SF, and was streaky as a 3pt shooter. When he got hot though....
It looks like the Cavs got Cam Whitmore as well, all while keeping Jalon Tyson!
The Cavs were not an athletic team and were small on the wings last season and it showed in the PO. This trade definitely solves those issues. However it will need to address the backup PG position somehow. I like Craig Porter Jr. but he hasn't shown to be a PG that can handle the press all that well and there is nobody on the current roster outside of what Harden can bring that can.

Its a fine trade, but if he's not knock down, its gonna be tough to fit him in with Allen/Mobley. But ya, for the upside that is still there, a 1st is more than fine. They needed a change regardless and whether this pays off or doesnt, its definitely worth the 1st

So bringing back Beal and now Strus. Is Mathurin going to get his QA recinded?
