Holiday to Miami: Miami/Portland/Utah

Post#1 » by Bentley1225 » Thu Aug 27, 2026 1:44 pm

Ill offer this idea for:
-Miami to land a veteran PG who is familiar in playing with Giannis
-Portland gets younger, gets more flexibility and gets a 1st for Holliday
-Utah grabs PG depth with a guy who can potentially start if Petersen needs some time his rookie year coming off bench

To Miami (Trade Jovic, Mitchell, Smith, 1st)
-Jrue Holiday (1 year, $34.8 million plus $37.2 million PO)

To Portland (Trade Holliday)
-Nikola Jovic (4 year, $62.4 million)
-Dru Smith (1 year, $2.6 million plus T.O.)
-2027 Denver 2nd round pick
-2029 Miami 1st round pick
-$12.4 million TPE (portion of Walker Kessler $15.0 million TPE)

To Utah (Trade 2nd, TPE)
-Davion Mitchell (1 year, $12.4 million)

Why?
-The Heat make a move to position themselves to be a top 4 seed in EC in acquiring Holiday. In doing so, they can justify going into tax by adding more veteran minimum guys in latter days of free agency (Olynyk, Richards, Vincent, Agbaji etc)

Holiday/Larsson/FA?
Hardaway/Thompson/Conwell
Wiggins/Fontecchio/FA?
Giannis/FA?
Adebayo/Portis/FA?

-The Blazers cut salary by $16 million, pickup a SF/PF under 23 and a SG who can make up for Sharpe being out.

Morant/Henderson/Krejci
Lillard/Smith/Sharpe
Avdija/Cissoko
Camara/Jovic/Potter
Clingan/Williams/Hansen/Carlsson

-The Jazz add a veteran PG for more depth who can initial start season at the PG spot

Peterson/Mitchell/Collier
George/Williams/Konchar
Bailey/Sensaubaugh/Okogie
Karkannen/Filipowski
Jackson/Nurkic/Hayes/

I didn't think Miami had any tradable 1sts after the Giannis deal.

Even if they do this looks pretty bad for Portland unless they're much higher on Jovic then his recent play would warrant.

2029 could technically be unavailable to trade if their 2027 1st dont convey this year

I think we are fine with Collier as our backup. Not bad value on our end at all, just don't see the need.

They take on $3.6M with the trade assuming they are $4.8 under 1st apron as per Spotrac.

Well assuming it's a 1 year, VM deal, they can theoretically complete this deal for JH and then sign NR for same deal.

We're hard capped. You just dealt 3 players and returned one, leaving is enough room to sign one player. Web still have to put a roster on the floor.

Sounds like the trade doesn't work, but I definitely do this as a Blazer fan.

Not sure the upgrade from Davion to Jrue is worth a 1st though from Miami's perspective.

It's not. Given age and expense, and the fact that any pick we could somehow magically trade would have to be unprotected, I think we're quite happy to watch the buyout market for our 15th roster spot

Can you not sign players to veteran minimum if you are over 1st apron?. As suggested they can still fill out roster with guys like Nick richards, Kelly Olynyk, Ochai Agbaji and Gabe Vincent.

Yes, an NBA team over the first apron can still sign players to a veteran minimum contract.

Minimum Contract Rules for Apron TeamsAllowed at any level: Teams over both the first and second aprons retain the ability to sign free agents using the minimum player exception. No restrictions:

There is no limit on the number of minimum-salary contracts an apron-restricted team can hand out, provided they have roster spots available.

Distinction from MLE: While the first apron restricts teams to the smaller taxpayer mid-level exception and the second apron eliminates the mid-level exception entirely, the veteran minimum exception remains fully available to all teams regardless of payroll depth.

If the Heat were operating over the 1st apron (or even over the 2nd apron), they could sign players to vet min deals.

However that's not the situation. Miami has made moves this offseason (I think the Giannis trade) that hard caps them to being under the 1st apron. Therefore they cannot exceed the 1st apron for any reason. That's what being hard capped means.

Miami would love to have a player like Holiday - defense 1st, has played championship basketball with Giannis -- but one big issue is Holiday almost 100% takes his player option next year and that would put Miami out of contention for an excellent FA class.

Hard for Miami to be a player next year for any major free agents unless Giannis walks which I don't think any of us expect--we expect the extension as soon as he can sign it.

I don't think Miami will be making any roster decisions for this season based on being free agent players next summer. Just no way to add a max salary to Bam/Giannis and field a roster under the 1st apron. Just not a possibility.

Now if Giannis tells them I'm not extending, then sure Miami probably does value flexibility. They are the rare franchise that can see free agency as a viable primary team building strategy. But they made their plan for Giannis. Pre-agency as Smitty likes to say.

I don't think Miami necessarily has to sign a max guy, but any path to having some money to spend on FA requires Giannis to take a paycut (say a starting salary of $53.5, like Adebayo), Jovic to be traded for an expiring, and Portis likely extending at a lower starting number (say, at $10M). Miami could create about $30M in cap space in that scenario.

That's a a lot that has to fall into place, but if Giannis takes anything close to a $62M starting salary (his PO amount), Miami just won't have any path to adding much around him (and D Mitchell, THJ, and Larsson would all need contracts, too).

It seems like a simplified Jovic and picks for ??? trade is more reasonable/likely. DFS and Terance Mann come to mind. Mann could possibly fill the Jrue role (in a poor man's sense).
Rest in peace Mamba. There'll never be another Kobe.
