Stephen Curry officially eligible to sign a maximum two-year, $136.7 million extension

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Sat Aug 29, 2026 5:39 pm

The deal would secure him through the 2028–29 NBA season
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

He just got voted 11th best player in the league, absolutely positive.
I think he waits till next off season and signs 212/3.

Maybe not as a player, but he is a business onto himself, not unlike (though not to the level) of Lebron. Im not sure how many teams are capable of trading 60 mil in salary and assets while retaining the top end talent + depth required to win at the highest level, though teams still likely give some level of a positive package for him.

He's still likely a high level star, underneath superstar level, but there are real questions about how his body will hold up. Huge forwards like Lebron aging well into the late 30's early 40's might give some hope that a guy like KD can do this. I dont know if Steph can, or if the 43 games he played last year is gonna be who he is moving forward

Yeah but it's possible he resigns for less if GSW can aquire a player worthwhile with their space.

He's clearly declining, both in terms of how effective he is on the court and his availability (I think that 11th ranking is several spots too high). It's far from certain if he still has on-court value equal to a 35% max deal for this season, much less going forward.

Obviously he has off-court value as well, especially for GS. If GS is just looking to keep fan interest while working some younger players in for a rebuild (the full scorched-earth rebuild isn't really an option anymore) then he'd be worth a full max deal for 2 or even 3 more seasons. If GS is going to try and compete then a full max deal for Curry is a problem.

Paying any player 60m is incredibly difficult.

He isn't worth that, if you are trying to compete.

He's Steph Curry. Of course he's worth it. Certainly to Golden State which is where he is getting it. But imagine what he would mean to Charlotte if they could really make that dream come true. The team would be relevant for the first time in its entire existence. That's a bargain.

Value isn't just production divided by salary divided by age lol. Its' not nearly so linear or simplistic.

There is a reason LA and Houston offered old man Dirk full max deals when he was no longer a max level player on the court. And Curry has more cache than even Dirk did. This guy is an all-time great player. Still playing at a very high level even if no longer at his previous MVP level. Plus he's a face of the league, a guy with a sterling reputation, etc...

There are a handful of teams who wouldn't want him at his salary because of how it would tear up a contender. Every other team would be elated to pay him his max for 3 more seasons even with further drop off as a player expected.

I imagine Curry takes this extension pretty soon. Last contract.

even if the Charlotte thing is going to come to fruition at some point (I don't expect it), it makes sense for the Warriors to just sign him to whatever Steph wants, and then extort a pick or two out of us in 2028 or whenever. We're run by businessmen, they'd jump on it even if Steph is old and broken by then.

Yeah, if he wants the money - you give it to him. He’ll be a positive on that two year deal..

If he’s willing to give up money for the right free agent, you delay this extension a year..

Id think any team with cap space next offseason would happily give him a 3 year max if GSW didn’t want to pay him. realistically GSW offers him whatever deal he wants though. Why wouldn’t Memphis want to give their kids Curry for 2 years? CLT homecoming.. Chicago decline Powell deal and sign Curry? Easiest decision..

If Dallas is a cap space team, I would hope they sign Curry to whatever deal he agrees with..

His retirement season (whenever it is) he’ll be overpaid for production - and the team will still come out ahead..

A FA signing is one thing, but a trade offering real assets if GS extends him on this number is something totally different. I don't see a good outcome for Memphis if we have to give up value to pay him this much, but signing him as a free agent would be fine. I agree that the money will more than likely be there if he wants it from someone, but the trade value is going to be dicey at best if he extends at this number.

Yeah paying Curry - anyone who can should. But paying for Curry would be a smaller group I agree.

IMO there would be enough teams bidding that he’d still be a positive asset though, even if it’s not some huge return - still clearly positive. Do think Curry’s contract will pay for itself. And it depends if these teams are paying for Curry in January 2027 or July 2027.. the extra playoff run of a top 15ish player..

Only way I see Steph taking less like significantly less money is if he convinces a big star to join him in GSW like Kawhi (if the Clippers/Raptors deal gets nixed) or gets LeBron plus KD to make a final push to have an older super team. I don't see Jokic to GSW but maybe Gobert or Towns could if they decline their player options. I thought about AD to GSW but convincing him to decline his $60+ million player option is a tough ask unless your giving him say 4/$200 or 5/$250+ and with his injury history I don't see that as smart when Curry retires in 2 more years.

The ownership group owes Curry every single penny he's taken them from a franchise stuck in limbo living off the memories of yester-year to one of the best sports dynasties in the last 30-40 years

Interesting options:
1. Steph signs for the min, GSW use their cap space, while maintaining his bird rights, and rewarding him a year later with 3 year max.
2. Steph wants to go to CHO, He extends for 2 year max, waived and signs for CHO with cap space/MLE.

Curry probably won’t, but he should really consider a trade to Hornets this 2027 offseason.

1) Curry could leave GSW with some nice rebuilding assets. Hornets have draft picks coming out their ears, it would take just some of them.

2) Hornets excitement would really give aging Curry a jolt. Same for Hornets franchise becoming super relevant.

3) Hornets have assets (do they have the salary filler?) to acquire yet another star to join Curry. Say a Jokic. Then add some older ring chasing stars (KD?, James?, etc.) and it could be a super fun ride going after another ring in Charlotte (in Eastern conference).
