Rockets trades Tracy McGrady

TO

Hawks for J.Johnson, L.Wright, S. Stoudamire, and S.Jones

Rox P.O.V.

The Rox look to go in a new direction w/o Mac so they go after JJ, who plays the same position Mac does. Although JJ isn't a superstar like Mac is. He still brings the same similaries Mac does from PPG, solid agressiveness, and the capabilities of getting his teammates involve in games. Ren Wright gives the Rox a big body for defense and rebounding purposes to play spot up minutes to rest Mutombo some games from the bench. Stoudamire gives the Rox some offense power from the bench standpoint. Keep in mind that both Wright and Stoudamire have expiring contracts for the Rox to get under the salary cap with. Jones gives the Rox another big body on the bench in case any of the Rox big men go down with an injury.

Although this move would put the Rox over the 15 miminum roster, they would have to waive a few players for this to work. Like the following

Steve Francis- barely plays and Rox can buy him out.
Carl Landry- have expiring contract with les money
Kirk Synder- see above
Salim Stoudamire- would add to Rox logjam in backcourt.

ATL P.O.V.

T' Mac, being a superstar would bring more bodies to Phillips Arena since the Hawks have attendance problems. T'Mac also brings the all around game to the Hawks like scoring, passing to teammates, decent rebounding. He would also make the Hawks a bit better in the case of athleticism.

JJ is more than enough for T-Mac he is a great player...He also don't miss 40 games a year...

Atl says no and keeps their star. Both are good scorers, both can get the ball to their teammates, however JJ is younger, cheaper, and doesn't have an injury history. Atlanta thens has to give up an expiring contract, a solid shooter, and a young big? I doubt I even do JJ for t-mac.

key point

I dont think the rockets do it either because its more of a lateral move than anything else

When healthy, Tmac is just flat out better than JJ, and the rest of the pieces are just flat out filler (on the reasonable assumption that sheldon is a bust). Houston is trying to win now, and this downgrades the talent AND forces us to make a bunch of roster cuts. Its not going to happen this way.

T-Mac may be the better player, but JJ is younger and has yet to hit his ceiling IMO.

Most important is the fact that Joe hadn't missed a regular season game due to injury or illness until last year when he missed 25 games with a calf injury.

When Joe is off the court Atlanta is a worse team (though this situation is improving this year). The Hawks can't afford to lose their All-Star for 20+ games a year.

Plus, while he is a bona-fide superstar, T-Mac is more expensive and significantly older. His salary would interfere with resigning the Josh's this offseason.

Hawks pass.
