How about a simple Brent Barry for Earl Watson swap.

This gives SAS a backup point guard and gives Seattle an expiring contract and nice leader that can play the 1/2/3.

SAS:

Oberto/Elson
Duncan/Horry
Bowen/Udoka
Finley/Manu
Parker/Watson

SEA:

Wilcox/Swift
Collison/Thomas
Durant/Green
Wilkins/Barry
West/Ridnour

San Antonio would be better served letting Barry expire there and signing Duhon, Lue, or Pargo..or even Sam Cassell to a smaller deal than Watson. If a PG is what they are after.

Watson is better than Pargo and Lue for that team. They are more shoot first pgs. Cassell has talked about going to Denver to be with Karl next season. The thing is, there is no guaranteeing that they are going to be able to get Duhon or another PG in free agency, and this would at least guarantee that they have one. Plus they need to start getting a little younger and this deal does that, even if it is just a minor deal.

Yeah but his contracts not.

San Antonio's not paying Earl Watson 6.2 million a year for the next 2 seasons to play 10mpg while Tony Parker plays the other 38.

There are cheaper options out there for the Spurs.

Also Cassell has also said he would go to Boston too.

I think the common theme is he wants a shot at another ring.

San Antonio?

And yet they have payed Barry similar figures the past couple of seasons to do the same thing, except at a less vital position as a 2.

The Spurs did it several seasons ago, but that doesn't mean they'll do it again

Besides, Barry plays PG for the Spurs as well

And the Spurs simply won't pay $6M/yr for a PG who is only going to see 12-15 mins of playing time.

OK and Watson can play the two guard position as well if need be.

The thing is that Finley is also expiring as is Udoka. What if they dont resign. Watson can at least round out your guard rotation, and his contract is not long and he can be a helpful player.

Ginobili 35 min/Watson 13 min
Parker 38 min/ Watson 10 min

Udoka's not an expiring.

Besides, I've tried this before; pretty much nothing anyone is willing to toffer is worth losing the cap flexibility SAS has going right now.

Barry is a much more versatile, smart and useful player than Earl Watson.

As a former Grizzlie, I got much love for Earl, but he wouldn't be a target of the Spurs with his skillset and his price.

Udoka was signed for 2 years.

He has one more year with SA after this one.

not quite.

while barry and watsons salary numbers a similar (4yrs/20 mil vs 5yrs/29 mil), barry does not play a far less vital position for the spurs. spurs only need about 15 minutes a night out of the backup pg spot. and that number is actually a bit smaller, thanks to manu and barrys ability to handle spot point guard duties come playoffs. so in actuality, the backup pg spot is the least vital position on this team. so are the spurs willing to pay watson ~13 mil over the next two seasons, for around 15 minutes of PT a night?

as far as the straight value of this trade, i still probably dont pull the trigger. barry has been on fire the last two seasons for the spurs. with a ts% of 66.6 last year and 67.1 so far this year, hes been our most reliable outside shooter the last two years. one of the only reason that finley starts ahead of him is the fact that finley plays horribly off he bench (as seen when barry started 28 games for the spurs last year). and while watson is a respectable 3pt shooter (34% career), his game doesnt give the spurs what they need.

add the salary, positional, and skill set issues together, and i cant see the spurs pulling the trigger on this one.

While i agree that watson's contract is a bit pricey, he is not overpayed by much. He is around a four million dollar a year player. He plays good d and can get you a good 5-10 points off the bench. He seems like a good fit for the spurs tho.

i just think he is better than most pgs the spurs can get, for just a little more than those others would cost.

But you're still missing the point. Watson is a nice PG but he's not someone the Spurs need as a backup PG who only plays 15 mins maximum per game. Not at his price.

Would Johan Petro be enough of a sweetener for the Spurs in such a deal?

So basically:

Watson, Petro for Barry.

Not much. We have Splitter coming over next year, as well as Mahinmi developing. So adding another young big (especially a mediocre one like Petro) doesn't help much.

probably not. we have enough project bigs right now (bonner learning the system, mahinmi in the d-league, splitter coming over next year). add another on and its just a log jam.

another side that hasnt been touched on is the luxury tax implications. right now, if reported numbers are right, the spurs are less than 100k below the tax line. all of that might change depending on what happens with the revolving door that is our open roster spots (washington, williams, langford, dj). if the spurs do cut these guys before the jan 10 cut off, than they should still be just a hair below the line. but if any of these deals goes down, it definitely ends that discussion, and ends up costing the spurs over 4 mil in lost money (paid tax plus the tax reimbursement).

^ great point on the luxury tax implications.

If the Spurs didn't care much about the lux tax, they wouldn't have given Scola to Houston for a 2nd round pick to get rid of Jackie Butler.

In a heartbeat.

On a sidenote, it's funny that Brent Barry was/is so wildly popular in Seattle while his dad, Rick Barry, was/is totally hated. I've personally seen Seattle fans throw beer on Rick Barry, and Seattle fans just don't do that sort of thing.
