Clippers - Sacramento Trade

Post#1 » by ClipperEric » Fri Jan 4, 2008 12:21 am

Kings get:
Corey Maggette
Sam Cassell

Clippers get:
Mike Bibby

The Clips year is over. We have to think about next year and the long haul. We need a proven shooter/leader. One thing we are sorely lacking is a small, quick guard that can run around with all the other small, quick guards in the west (Nash, Parker, Devin Harris, etc).

I used to be a Maggette fan but he just doesn't cut it. He can't shoot and doesn't play D, and his 20 points/game are the ugliest 20 pts you'll ever see. He just isn't the star that we'd hoped for.

Sam is the man but let's face it, he's old. And his expiring contract is valuable.

Bibby is a deadly shooter and a bigtime player when the game is on the line. Whe've been burned by Bibby many times over the years. He always seems to go for 30+ against us. Kind of reminds me of Sam, but a lot quicker, and he's only 29.

The money works out almost perfectly.

I love Livingston but he's a big question mark. We don't know how he'll be when he returns. And even if he's great, wouldnt' it be nice to have 2 ball handlers out there?

Bibby is set to get approx $14mil next year. I see that as the only hurdle, does Donald T want to spend that kind of money? And Bibby is coming off injury.

Losing these 2 players now will kill us for the rest of the year, but we're already one of the worst teams in the league and we're getting a top draft pick. This may actually help us in the long run.

With this trade Sacramento gets away from a huge contract and picks up 2 expiring ones (Maggette has on opt out). That frees up almost $14mil for them next year.

The lineup next year looks like this:

Brand
Kaman
Thomas
Bibby
Livingston

Bench:
Thornton
Q Ross
Mobley
Our #1 pick
Davis
Brevin Knight

The only way I don't do this deal is if we can package something for Gilbert Arenas, but what's the reality of that happening? And if it does, we'd have to give up a lot more.[/list]

The Clips should at least include their 2008 #1 pick and have to take Kenny Thomas.
