Why:
Tried to address needs in the sticky. Wilkins is an athletic SG/SF who can defend and run. Farmar is a promising young floor general. Radmanovic is an exchange of one bad contract for another(Gadzuric), and can become the designated sharp shooter on the squad. Lamar is athletic and get up and down the court with ease and grace. Kwame is expiring and helps them to shed the Simmons contract completely. The rest is filler.

Why: Seattle literally saves 11 million dollars, and gets a decent second round pick. Think about the degree of money being saved... 11 million dollars. That's nearly 20% of the current payroll. Not to mention, they will get a HUGE trade exception that could prove valuable if they want to use it. I think the FO might like this type of deal more than the fans, but saving 11 million dollars is nothing to balk at from an owner's perspective when it comes to two guys who will probably be gone by the start of next year anyway(due to expiring K and player option).

The OP mentioned a trade exception... I'm not so sure about that, but if we do get a 9million trade exception, then a big HELL YES for seattle.

but what good would another trade exception do? thomas and his 9 mil come off the books next year anyway. and if you want to move thomas for another contract i am sure you could find better offers than a second round pick.

Maybe we can use the trade exception for Dwight Howard?

LOL, your proposal will NEVER work. Seattle doesnt need 2nd round picks. We have 5 1st's the next 3 years as it is. If anything we trade our 2nds

K Thomas' veteran leadership is more valuable to the young Sonics than a TPE. Besides, there's been better offers.

I'm not ready to give away Kurt Thomas for just a 2nd round pick, even if we'd be able to trade Wilkins during the process.

Like said above, Thomas veteran leadership is way more valuable to us then the 5th 2nd round pick in this years draft.

Lakers are in the business of trading serviceable depth to get a shoot-first guard to play with Kobe, who plays no defense (which Phil would love) and then have to go out and sign a new PF this offseason, and O yeah, play Bobby Simmons at the PF in the West. Any more trades where the Lakers set themselves back three years?

Kobe isnt going to be playing the SF role anytime soon. Every year people talk about him playing more at the 3 but it never happens. Redd doesnt change this and Redd+Simmons doesnt really help anybody. They can do much better I think.

Tex Winters has specifically said Kobe is better attacking at the 3, and he can definitely be played there if necessary.

As far as the poster saying this sets the Lakers back three years, it sets them back one year. That's it. The players wouldn't be familiar with the triangle until next year. Bobby Simmons at PF in the West is NO WORSE than playing Vladimir Radmanovic for long stretches with the second unit, and it's not like Lamar is a real PF himself either. As far as Redd playing zero defense, Redd/Bryant is STILL MUCH BETTER defensively than Bryant/Walton. Offensively? Not even worth getting into. Gadzuric is capable of sucking up minutes at C should we need to play KT 25 minutes a game at PF. Again, one year. The next year they'd have the MLE to address any blatant problems.

To the Sonics' fans, yes you get a 8 million TPE and a TPE the size of Wilkins' contract as well. Again, there may have been better offers from a fan perspective, but this literally saves 11 million dollars. Management might have a different perspective on this deal considering the money is coming out of THEIR pocket, and Kurt is gone at the end of the season. I'm not exactly sure what the better offers have been(I haven't followed the Sonics threads closely enough), but the Sonics will be hard pressed to land a 1st rounder, and, even in that case, they will need to receive matching expirings which means the FO pays all that money rather than just shedding it for free.

Consider this(in management's eyes):
1. 9 Million TPE for 2 Firsts, and the responsibility to pay Kurt's contract
2. The responsibility to pay KT's contract for an 8 Million TPE and a high second rounder

Net result:
3. 2 Firsts, a high second rounder for a TPE that is slightly smaller than the previous one

Can you say deal of the year?
