Because trades need both partisipants to agree, and the Knicks have nothing that would entice the Wolves to move Theo. They can't realistically move Theo for non-expirings and stay under the lux, and there's no way Glen Taylor is going to let a 15ish win team go over the lux.

The wolves CANNOT trade Theo Ratliff and have any chance of signing their players and picks next year without going into the lux.
If a deal contains Theo Ratliff, it might as well contain Gomes, Craig Smith and Telfair. However, I think if you're looking at MIN's most untradable, the list goes:
1. Al Jefferson
2. Randy Foye
3. Theo Ratliff

This makes no sense for either team. So is Minny now trying to contend with Marbury and Curry on board?
They're in a rebuilding stage...

I thought about Corey and almost put him in as a tie. Ratliff's expiring is so big, it gives the wolves tremendous flexibility, which could affect several young players. I think most would Wolves fans would agree with you, but I might have Glen Taylor on my side.

What are the Knicks supposed to do with those players? Wipe their rears with them? Lose more games than there are left? What?

after this year, MN would have $ obligated to:
Marbury-Foye
McCants-Brewer
Jefferson
Curry-Madsen
..about $45 million...WAY under the luxury tax (even if you add in howard and hudson's buyouts). Yes they are rebuilding, and here they get their center of the future in Curry. And Marbs would be a $20 million expiring. Resign Gomes and Smith and maybe Telfair and you'd still right about the perceived lux tax of about $68 million. Don't see how that is all bad?

Jefferson + Curry = Fringe playoff team AT BEST.
Jefferson at PF, although not bad on D, is hardly the stopper that you would need to pair Curry with.
Why does NY do this?
Just because its them!?!?!

addition by subtractions, $ savings, chemistry/attitude improvements....

McHale and the Wolves aren't looking for soft players like Curry or Marbury. Curry has no place in McHale's "plan". As for those saying that Theo won't be traded because then Gomes, Smith, and Telfair won't be re-signed well don't expect any of them being on the team next year or certainly not for more than 2 or 3 million each for 1 or 2 of them. McHale doesn't care about re-signing them only that his team will be in a good cap situation with Al Jefferson under contract 6 years.

Even if this was true, then Gomes, Craig Smith, Chris Richard (and maybe Telfair) should be traded, since they can help some other team this season.
However, even by his quotes two days ago, its obvious McHale is considering some of them. He's not so concerned with the losses as he is finding out what roles the young players can have with the future of the Wolves. All these guys continue to get playing time as this is being sorted out.
Next season will be tight under the lux, and its doubtful Glen Taylor will exceed it on a team so far from a ring. I think that these hard decisions are already starting, but won't be made until far later in the season.
