What's Calderon's value now?

Not that the Raptors would really think of moving him at the moment, but I'm sure most of you remember the countless Calderon trade threads a little over a month ago before Caldy was starting games consistently. Now that he's proven he's a legit starter and by the numbers one the better points in the NBA, what's his value around the league now? And remember he's a restricted free agent (loserX argument), so whichever team would trade for him would have full rights in their attempt to re-sign him in the off season.

Well, I'm thinking a lot of teams have interest in him and would be willing to trade some valuable pieces to acquire him. It's like any other good player that's proposed in a trade on this board, right? You have to give up fair value in return.

The problem is that if Toronto even puts him in play, other teams will know that they're showing their hand. they will know that the reality of paying Calderon significant money, when they already have a huge deal already in place with Ford is probably not visable. If Calderon lets say had already signed a MLE deal as a back-up a year ago. But then started to show what he has with more PT, because of Ford's recent Injury, then his value would be off the charts cause one,,other teams would know that at a MLE deal, the Raps could just choose to keep with without regards to their team payroll.

However, since he is a free agent at seasons end, and since it's more than likely he will be offered a deal more than the MLE. It's more likely that Toronto would hurt their overall flexibility in the future by matching it. they could match it, and then look to field offers at a later time. But then you get into base year comp issues, and what not. Also, the team signing Calderon could put in poison pills. Like a huge trade kicker that would make it harder for Toronto to trade him at a later point. They also could write in that Calderon has to start, or a huge bonus would apply to his deal after year 1. They can put in basically anything they want to try and make it next-to-impossible for the Raps to match it.

This is why it will be difficult to get very much for him right now. It's not Impossible to get value, just alot harder.

He is way more valuable to the Raptors than he is to any other team (except Phoenix) so they could not get what other teams would give for an impending FA.

Why is he way more valuable to PHX? Are you under the false assumption that Toronto is a run and gun team? Because Calderon is a wizard in the half court just he is brilliant at pushing the ball up the floor when there's a chance too. He can ran any kind of offense you want at an insanely efficient rate.

"You get more respect if you sign a good contract. But it's not everything. If I get a 12-million offer next year from a team that has no options to win, I'm not interested to go there at all", said Jose Calderon. "It would be bad for my career. I will seriously look at it."

He's not going to sign the first offer sheet he sees, there's a lot more to it. I don't know about all that other stuff, I think teams will have serious interest but I don't see any team going to those lengths. Should note the only teams with serious cap in the off season are Atlanta (Josh Smith) and Philly (Iggy cash + losing situation) I believe.

Calderon really impressed me when he played us this season..I could see the Blazers making a move for Calderon if you weren't going to ask so much for him..I'll make a stab...

Blazers Trade:
Jarrett Jack
Sergio Rodriguez
Rights to Joel Freeland

Raptors Trade:
Jose Calderon

But ATL could decide to let Childress go. that would free up the space to make a big offer while still signing Smith.

Man, you'd have to start talking Outlaw/Webster at least to start off.

Hopefully the Hawks/Sixers are both too busy re-signing their own guys. I could see Philly pursuing Josh Smith.

I doubt they want to just let their 6th overall pick go for nothing. Even though they have more than enough players to fill his position. I can see them trying to trade him though. Then that would remove his cap hold, and Atlanta would have about 9 million to spend.

There is about 40 million already invested between Johnson, Claxton, Williams, Pachulia, Horford, SWill and Law. Seven players. If Smith is extended, his deal will probably start at around 10-11mill. That is now 50mill commited between 8 players.

Unless Atlanta moves some contracts, I don't see them as much of a threat for Calderon.

Yeah, I also expect Josh and his agent to extract a lot of extra cash this off season, probably more than he's worth. Philly could make things complicated if they come in and offer something front loaded. We all know about the Atlanta ownership situation. I see him signing a 5-6 year deal off the bat for 12 or more annually, unlike guys like Wade, Bosh and James who signed shorter deals knowing they can sign for more after 3 years.

I think Calderon would be perfect in Denver, alongside AI. My first ever post (about a week ago) was a trade for Calderon(should TJ make it back before deadline). After a little discussion I think we ended up with a 3-way:

Calderon, Parker and Nesto

for Nene, Atkins (since hurt again), a 1st and Delonte West

with JRSmith and a 2nd going to Seattle.

Najera for Garbo would be a possible addition.

Reaction from TOR fans was mixed, at best. Yours?

I'm not sure if other Bulls fans would agree, but I'd give Hinrich. I'd also be willing to throw in Sefolosha. I'm a big Calderon fan. Toronto should keep him.

That's not a bad offer or anything, but I don't think we'd be interested in Nene and his contract, especially with his history of injuries. And giving up Parker is a real no-no, who would replace his production from the wing? J.R Smith? I don't think so, if you thought Karl was hard on him, you haven't seen nothing, J.R wouldn't even see the floor on Sam Mitchell's team.

What's the matter? No more low blow offers coming in, I guess Calderon has finally commanded some respect around here.

I guess he's not just a back-up anymore.
