Mavs-Clips 5 players deal

Post#1 » by Darren » Sun Jan 13, 2008 12:11 pm

Mavericks gets:
Sam Cassell
6-3 PG from Florida State
11.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 4.2 apg in 23.9 minutes

Corey Maggette
6-6 SF from Duke
19.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 2.8 apg in 34.6 minutes

Clippers gets:
DeSagana Diop
7-0 C from Oak Hill Academy (HS)
3.2 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 0.5 apg in 18.2 minutes

Devean George
6-8 SF from Augsburg-MN
2.5 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 0.4 apg in 10.6 minutes

Jason Terry
6-2 PG from Arizona
15.0 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.4 apg in 31.0 minutes

2008 second round draft pick

Why for Dallas?
Corey is a great addition to the championship puzzle. The trades allow the Mavs to play more versatile b-ball. This also allow the Mavs to gets JJB some playing time to improve the PG plays. It opens a spot to sign althetic big like Birdman who is about to get out of NBA suspension.

C - Damp / Birdman / Faz
PF - Dirk / Bass / Juwan
SF - Mag / Trenton / EJ
SG - JoHo / Stack / Ager
PG - Devin / JJB / Cassell

Why for LA?
JET is the type of combo guard they can accompany with Shuan. Lacking of perimeter shooter is a huge problem. The trades create some space for Kaman to work inside. Gana would get some much needed playing time on LAC. They need more muscle when Chris's forced to sit.

C - Kaman / Gana / A.Wil / P.Davis
PF - Brand / Thornton / Powell
SF - Ross / TT / DG
SG - JET / Mobley / Dickau
PG - Livingston / Knight / Diaz

Not bad, but Cassell and Maggette are both pretty injury prone. I don't see Dallas making any huge trades though anyway.

Pass (especially if Diop has to be included).

It's not just those two, it's George also. And Maggette + a 38yo injury day in and day out is not worth 2 of those 3.

Yah I know I didnt mean this package, just in general. Like what type of value does it take to get those 2 players?

I really don't know. Maybe another Maverick fan would answer this more fairly.

I like Diop too much. He has improved offensivly and does everything for us that Ben Wallace does for Chicago. The difference is Diop, though better numbers per minute (and even better per game when he played the 30 +/- when Damp was out), younger & taller, does not have the swagger and name reputation that Wallace has. In any trade that involves Diop, a quality bitg man coming back is a start.

Jason Terry still plays 30 min on our team as insurance when our defensive starter (Harris) gets in foul trouble and he also serves as our SG when we need scoring prodution and/or a speedy backcourt. He has multiple roles on our team that would not be filled easily. Still one of the best % shooters in the league and his defense has dramatically improved over the last couple of weeks. If we trade Terry, it would ONLY be for a starting quality swingman and a backup PG (which this trade did satisfy without Diop).

George was a HUGE part of the first 43 (we were 43-3 after his 1st game and before his injury) of our 67 wins, but he has had a tough battle back into rotation with the additions of Brandon Bass taking may of his minutes at C and PF and Eddie Jones & Trenton Hassell taking many of his minutes at the swing position. He can back up the 2-5 positions well and Avery even expirimented (while I cringed) with him as a point forward in the Detroit game.

People who do not see these players day in and day out would under-value them (and Dampier too).

Personally, 1) I think our center spot if fine top to bottom 2) Terry is the PERFECT 3rd guard in a 3 guard rotation and 3) I think George is the PERFECT guy to keep on a veteren team to backup any position as needed (jack of all trades, master of none).

I don't want to trade any of the 3.

The thing that puzzles me is that Darren used to be a mavs fan. Most trades I see out of him lately hurt the mavs

1. Jason Terry is no longer the clutch shooter we knew. And he's proven burden defensively. The combo guard backcourt suck.

2. Corey Maggette is really a very physical and skilled player who can get to the lane with ease. We need more penetration. Although he's not famous for shooting 3, he can hit them. He plays D better than EJ, DG, Trenton and JET combined.

3. Devean George fails to impress me. While I watch the game, he's slow. I don't think he has enough altheticism to play big D as last year.

4. Desagana Diop disappoint me. He can run and block some. But his early improvement is not strong enough to convince me with his latest lacking interest (after Damp gets the spot). 5 fouls in 5 minutes is totally unacceptable.

5. Sam Cassell loses most of his altheticism. But he's a winner. And he's expiring. He's clutch. I am not totally against getting him.

If you don't think this is a fair deal, you'd better ask fans from other teams. I don't think JET's not having great value around the league.

Were you even watching last night? Terry is the one who got us back into the game and was the one making the clutch shots at the end!

He had 25 pts while shooting 63% (75% from 3) with 7 ast and a block.

And he was able to do that while playing mostly the 2 guard spot.

Anyways, guess it's just a difference in opinion. Still, take Diop out of the original trade and I would do it. The problem lies in the fact that from the Clippers POV, both Maggette and Cassell are expirings and they can use them as such.

Personally, I think the Clippers should trade Cassell to the Warriors using the TPE.

i think maggette and E.T. would be great for us ... but i'm not too keen on letting diop go

25-30 minutes for damp at the 5 is okay, but then ... who will play the other 20? bass, dirk and juwan howard ...? Hopefully not
