5 Team Trade to Cure the Knicks w/ LAL, SA, SACTO & ORL
Posted: Tue Jan 15, 2008 11:06 pm
Bear with me. Give it a chance, that's all I ask.
NYK needs to clear long-term cap space and open up playing time for younger players.
SACTO needs to unload two unhappy stars (Bibby and Artest)
ORL needs offense and veteran leadership in the backcourt
SA needs low post offense. Also, because they are alrady cap strapped for the next few seasons, they want to keep contracts from expiring so they'll have new expiring contracts to use as trade bait in the next few seasons.
LA LAKERS are already set at SG and C, now look to improve at PF, SF, and PG. Hopefully acquire some talented players closer in age to Kobe.
Okay, here's the trade:
NEW YORK trades
Jamal Crawford
Eddy Curry
Stephon Marbury
Zach Randolph
Renaldo Balkman
$3 million cash
FOR
Lamar Odom
Kwame Brown
Francisco Elson
Robert Horry
Tony Battie
Keyon Dooling (released)
Pat Garrity (released)
Salaries Out: $49.2 million
Salaries In: $44 million
WHY FOR THE KNICKS: A move long overdue. For the cost of Balkman, they set themselves up for long-term recovery. With Randolph, Curry and Crawford off the books, they only need to be patient until they have the chance to land an all-NBA quality player (Lebron, Wade) in the near future.
ORLANDO trades
Keith Bogans
Pat Garrity
Tony Battie
Keyon Dooling
JJ Reddick
FOR
Jamal Crawford
Brent Barry
Chris Mihm
$3 million cash
Salaries Out: $17.0 million
Salaries In: $15.9million
WHY FOR ORLANDO: Without giving up any starters, the Magic get a slashing scorer in Crawford and a veteran shooter with playoff experience in Barry (who is also an expiring contract). Mihm replaces the injured Battie as a backup center. The $3 million is for Mihm so he agrees to the trade.
LAKERS trade
Lamar Odom
Kwame Brown
Vlad Radmonivic
Chris Mihm
2008 #1 pick
FOR
Ron Artest
Mike Bibby
Zach Randolph
Salaries Out: $30.5 million
Salaries In: $34.6 million
WHY FOR LAKERS: Three solid new starters at the positions they most need help. All have personal relatonships with Kobe. Odom has never been a good fit in LA, so losing him is no big deal. Say what you want about Randolph, he's played better than Odom these last couple seasons and been on the court healthy far more often. Bibby and Artest have had their problems, but both would make nice for a trip out of Cowtown. The #1 pick will be late twenties so it's not worth that much.
SAN ANTONIO trades
Brent Barry
Robert Horry
Francisco Elson
2008 #1 pick
FOR
Eddy Curry
Vlad Radmonovic
Salaries Out: $12.1 million
Salaries In: $14.6 million
WHY FOR SA: They get two proven talents for next to nothing. Sure Curry has problems as the Knicks go to guy in the post, but watch what he does as a backup or 2nd post option. He'll be very much like James Edwards for the Bad Boy Pistons. Vlad gives them a PF with outside range to draw defenders away from Duncan or knock down the open 3. Like the Lakers #1, this is a late round pick and of little use to the Spurs.
SACRAMENTO trades
Mike Bibby
Ron Artest
FOR
Stephon Marbury
Renaldo Balkman
JJ Reddick
SA & Lakers 2008 #1 picks
Salaries Out: $21.3 million
Salaries In: $22.3 million
WHY FOR SACTO: The whole league wants Bibby and Artest, but I can't see them getting more than this in a trade. Artest is going to walk after the season. Bibby does nothing but sulk. Marbury is a trainwreck, but becomes a great trading chip as early as the 2008 draft. Reddick and Balkman are recent #1 picks. Essentially, their trading two big headaches for a soon-to-be expiring contract and 4 #1 picks. Not a bad haul.
Comments? Criticisms? Be gentle.
