Chicago trades:
Joakim Noah
Tyrus Thomas
Chris Duhon
Andres Nocioni
Viktor Khryapa
Lottery protected 1st round pick through 2010.
Memphis trades:
Damon Stoudemire
Pau Gasol
Why for Chicago: They get Gasol and Stoudemire who can be a great backup point guard for them.
Why for Memphis: They get rid of two players who don't really want to be there and get some great rebuilding pieces. A future front court with Thomas and Noah and the small forward they wanted this offseason with Nocioni. And they get a future pick. They won't get this good of a deal anywhere else.
Then the Bulls sign Ruben Patterson to the vet min along with Dale Davis.
Chicago:
Hinrich/Stoudemire
Gordon/Thabo
Deng/Patterson/Griffin
Gasol/Smith
Wallace/Gray/Davis
Memphis:
Conley/Lowry/Duhon
Gay/Juan
Miller/Nocioni
Thomas/Warrick/Swift
Darko/Noah
Chi/Mem

I've never been one to believe that you can have a young franchise move forward without at least one star. And in this trade the Grizzlies would trade their one bonafide star and really get nothing resembling one in return unless they wait until 2010 on the hopes that the Bulls would still be a lottery team (which seems unlikely). Too many players that probably should be playing that really won't have time to for the Grizzlies after this but no one that can carry them.

Well I think with their current team, they'll be drafting their future stars. They have their future back court in Conley and Gay and two young big men, but I think Noah is definitely a career six man. So if they draft Beasley, they have a future 3 spot and then trade Miller and maybe Lowry for a decent big man, they have a solid young core.
Conley
Gay
Beasley
Thomas
Noah
Darko
Nocioni
If Conley is going to be as good as he was advertised, he can be their star, and Gay is developing into a 20 ppg scorer. So I think this really benefits them in the long run, especially because Gasol and Stoudemire really don't seem like they want to be there.

I see what you're saying but I think the Grizzlies need to work this into some sort of a multi-team deal perhaps where they get a top 5 lottery pick (kinda like Seattle did with Ray Allen) along with some minor peices. That way the Grizzlies can actually look at drafting two guys in the Beasley, Rose, Gordon, Mayo, Jordan, Batum range (yeah I know they have Conley but you are still getting more likely franchise level talents that can then be spun off instead of more reserve players).

So basically, the Grizz are being asked to trade their star bigman for admittedly nothing more than depth and role players - and then told their best hope to replace said star big man is their own draft pick ... question - why not hold on to star bigman and draft another star?

Because said star bigman has shown in the past he really doesn't want to be there. Gasol doesn't want to sit through and lose all the time. Memphis isn't anywhere near winning or even being good enough to compete with the top ten in the west, and it doesn't look like they will anytime soon.
Also Tyrus Thomas has the potential to be a great player in this league. He was drafted so high for a reason, so he's more then a role player in this trade.
