Not that I want to deal Amare, but with the rumors that internally the Suns are considering it, I dabbled to see what I could come up with that would help both teams for the long haul. It's still sketchy on the other side though.

Phoenix trades:
Amare
Barbosa
Atl 08 Pick
08 2nd
09 2nd

Atlanta trades:
Joe Johnson
Smith
Horford

I think Phoenix would have to take this deal. They get 2 bigs in return for Amare in Horford and Smith and basically swap Barbosa for Johnson. They get better defensively and rebounding wise. Plus we get a 2 guard that can create his own shot.

Atlanta might not do the deal, but it helps them big time in the East. Amare is a beast and match-up problem for everyone in the East. Barbosa and Johnson have similar stats but Barbs is a LOT cheaper. They don't have to worry about trying to resign Smith this summer. Barbs and Amare are already signed for the next 4 years. They also get their 1st round pick back. They could do one of two things after this trade. Right now they are trying to win as many games as they can to keep Phoenix from getting a good pick. They could either continue to win and hurt themselves a bit by screwing their draft position, OR they could start losing a few more games to move themselves into the Beasley, Rose, Mayo, Gordon positions.

The problem with the deal is actually that it doesn't help Phoenix with the luxury tax. Smith is due an extension (easily over 10M starting salary) and JJ makes 14M next year and Horford makes over 4M on his rookie deal. If Phoenix resigns Smith they will be replacing 20M in salary next season with 28M. Not likely for a team that trades away picks to stay under the cap.

Atlanta isn't trying to win games to keep from giving Phx a high pick, they are winning games because that is what you are suppose to do in the nba.

This is far from being fair for Atlanta. It makes them a lot worse. Barbosa and JJ don't put up similar stats. Yes Barbosa can score, but he does not have the rebounding and passing that JJ has. The extra 10 mpg isn't going to increase his rebound and assist numbers to JJ's numbers.

Amare is good, but it isn't worth givie up two young studs in Horford and Smith.

How is:

I just don't see it.

And the expanded deals don't help Atlanta either.

This makes Atlanta worse. By a lot I think. Don't get me wrong, Amare and Barbs are great but those are our top 3 assets.

Hawks don't need to give up Horford. They need to go big of they get Amare with Horford at the 4 so that they can Dominate the paint for the next 7 or 8 years, especially since good big men are a rarity nowadays. Take Horford out of the deal and replace him with Shelden Williams and then the Hawks will consider it.


This is coming from a Pacers fan though so I dunno if i'm right or not.

Not entirely sure either team would do it...decent return for Amare, but the cap ramifications are frightening.
