Bucks - Suns, outline for a trade idea

Right now this doesn't work, because Mo is byc. It can be made to work by adding Voskuhl for example, but that means the Suns take on more salary than they give out, and that won't happen. For this deal to happen a third team would have to be involved, or it would have to wait until summer.

Why for the Bucks: they get a star player for two good players. They will have Amare (25y), Redd (28) and Yi (erm... rookie) under contract for three more years, giving them time to build a contender.

Why for the Suns: it addresses two of their main weaknesses: post defense and backup PG. Bogut is probably a better defensive rebounder than Amare as well, and would fit in on offense. Mo has a long-term contract, but would be able to run the Suns' offense when Nash is sitting, and is able to play the two as well.

It's nice for the Bux, but I think Amare is one of the top few properties in the NBA. I think Phoenix would be foolish to trade him. Bogut is on a tear right now, and he's blocked some shots this season, but I don't think he adds any more defense than Amare does.

And Mo is awfully expensive for a PG - especially when they already have Barbosa. How do you split up the time to get Nash, Bell, Barbosa, and Mo enough PT?

I think Bogut does a better job guarding big guys like Duncan or Yao in the post. That's one of the biggest problems for the Suns, especially since they traded K Thomas.

The Suns have used a Nash / Bell / Barbosa line-up at times this year, but it's far from ideal. I guess one of them would have to go. Barbosa would be the odd man out imo, since Bell is the only one of them who's good on defense. Barbosa and Mo are similar players, but Mo is a much better playmaker (although not a pure point guard).

As for Mo's salary - I wouldn't say he's overpaid, but he is pretty expensive indeed, and the Suns already have a bunch of big contracts. But with Nash getting older (although you can't tell) and Marion expiring in 2009, the Suns will probably have to make changes in the near future anyway.

That was a typo on my part. I meant to say Mo is very expensive for a backup PG. Sorry about that. You're right that he has improved his playmaking this season - though he still thinks shoot a little more than is ideal.

You're right in that's a tough decision on how to keep 3 of the best players in the NBA, but I don't think this is the way they'd go, because they wouldn't be saving much. Remember, Bogut is going to be off of his rookie contract soon, and if he keeps up the way he's been playing this month, he's going to command a lot of money.

I think eventually the underrated Marion is going to be the odd man out.

With the way Bogut's playing now, I'm passing. If he keeps this up, he could very well be worth more than Amare.

Yup, financially it doesn't help much. There would definitely have to be major changes in 2009 if this went through.

It's not gonna be Nash, and Amare is much younger, so no argument there either.
