NJ/ORL/MIN
New Jersey
out: Jason Collins, future 1st (top-20 protected in 2008, lotto protected in 2009, top-8 protected in 2010, unprotected thereafter)
in: Craig Smith, JJ Redick, Pat Garrity
They reunite Craig Smith with former BC teammate Sean Williams. Smith gives them a low-post scorer that they need. Redick is a shooter that they can certainly use as a specialist off the bench. Pat Garrity gives them an expiring and get out of Collins' contract.
Rotation:
Williams/Magloire
Smith/Boone
Jefferson/Nachbar
Carter/Wright/Redick
Kidd/(Williams)/Armstrong
Orlando
out: Carlos Arroyo, Pat Garrity, JJ Redick, future 1st (top-22 protected in 2008, top-18 protected in 2009, lotto protected in 2010; if a 1st is not conveyed by 2010, ORL will turn over their 2nd round pick to MIN)
in: Ryan Gomes, Marko Jaric, Michael Doleac
They get Gomes to add some toughness to the front court. Jaric's pass-first mentality and defense make him an ideal backcourt partner for Nelson. Doleac gives them more depth at C and 6 more fouls to use come playoff time. The pick that they give up is guaranteed to be a low pick with the protection, so it's a low risk investment.
Rotation:
Howard/Foyle/Doleac
Gomes/Augustine
Lewis/Turkoglu
Bogans/Jaric
Nelson/Dooling
Minnesota
out: Marko Jaric, Michael Doleac, Ryan Gomes, Craig Smith
in: Jason Collins, Carlos Arroyo, NJ future 1st, ORL future 1st (will become a 2nd if not conveyed by 2010)
They get out of Jaric's deal and get Collins to fill in at C. They also get two future picks in return for Gomes and Smith.
Rotation:
Collins/Richard
Al/Walker
Brewer/Green
McCants/Buckner
(Foye)/Telfair/Arroyo

If Orlando does not offer a pick then we would exchange Gomes for Green. Gomes has legit value and personally I would rather hold onto him.

I think the "no pick from ORL" people make sense. Yes, they add a useful contract, but they have to sign the paycheck for a while.
However, on closer look, it may be NJN who seems to be getting a little too good a deal here. They turn Jason Collins 2-year deal of $12 mil into a cheaper expiring of $3.8 mil. They also get Craig Smith AND JJ Reddick for a heavily protected 1st?
I think this deal could be simplified, and everyone would still be happy:
ORL GIVES: Pat Garrity + JJ Reddick
ORL GETS: Ryan Gomes + Marko Jaric
Change in Team Outlook: +13.8 ppg, +5.5 rpg, and +4.5 apg
In this version, they keep their pick, and they keep the productive expiring Arroyo, and still get the 20 PPG of Gomes + Jaric.
MIN GIVES: Craig Smith + Ryan Gomes + Jaric
MIN GETS: Jason Collins + JJ Reddick + NJN 1st (debate the protections)
Change in Team Outlook: -25.4 ppg, -10.2 rpg, and -5.0 apg. ouch!
Collins is $6 mil, but he might have some use at center next year, and his deal correlates with the expiration of Walker, Hudson and Juwon. They get a protected first, and a prospect shooter. It's a tight squeeze next season (+$3 mil and a roster spot), but I think MIN can do that.
NJN GIVES: Collins + NJN protected 1st
NJN GETS: Craig Smith + Garrity
Change in Team Outlook: +11.6 ppg, +4.7 rpg, and +0.5 apg.
NJN turns Collins 2-year, $12 mil deal into an expiring which is a plus, and adds Craig Smith's low post scoring. I thik its enough, but if more was needed, ORL could offer a different expiring that's more productive, and I doubt either team would mind.
