Why for Seattle? They completely reshape their roster in one fell swoop while still owning their pick in the upcoming draft. They would still have to trade either Watson or Ridnour but they can do that over the offseason.

Why for Memphis? They COMPLETELY clear their cap, get a starting quality big man in return and pickup another lottery pick. It's the ultimate rebuilding plan if I ever saw one.


Why for Miami? They sacrifice future assets and luxury tax payments to try and get something going this year. Even if they don't make the playoffs they can at least work out chemistry/role issues and go into the offseason with an improved roster, knowing exactly what pieces they need.

The biggest problem I see with this deal overall is that Memphis could get significantly less value if Miami does go on a serious run after this trade. I don't think they will, though. Maybe they get the #5-7 instead of the #2 they're projected at now but I'd still consider that to be good value.

Thoughts?

Gasol isn't the kind of player Sam Presti is trying to acquire.

I think value wise this is a reasonable trade but the Sonics are not close to contending and Jeff Green is going to be Kevin Durants long term running mate.

I'd rather use Wilcox and pieces to go after a guy like Dalembert and keep Green.

How do the Heat get Green again?

True, the Sonics essentially give up an aging Ray, Wilcox and Swift for some pretty nice pieces.

Why not? Gasol scores but doesn't play D. That's not what Presti is looking for.

What's the need of Miller when you have Durant?

In this trade it also has Cardinal along with his ugly bloated contract coming to Seattle.

Lowry is a decent young PG but the Sonics could very likely end up drafting Derrick Rose or Jerryd Bayless, so now the Sonics would have 5 PGS on their roster. Lowry, Ridnour, Watson, West and the draft pick. That creates a log jam. And Navorro is decent but the guy is a 27 year old rookie.

Durant is 19 years old...That's 19 he is the youngest player in the league. Why saddle him with three 27 year olds? Gasol, Navarro and Miller?

So just when Durant gets good these guys will slow down. That's a perfect idea. Why not just call the Sonics the T-Wolves and make the same mistake they did by never giving KG a real long term stud player next to him.

You have Durant, Green and a young stud PG in this years draft, find a wing player in free agency and cross your fingers for one of the Sonics centers to become decent.

we get a package thats far superior to what we give up. thats the point i try to make here. getting durant a long term mate is good but equally important is getting a guy who could help him share the workload and help his progress. maybe this package isnt what is needed but durant needs a second option who is consistent and not a whinner. if we draft a pg he would take some time to develop and that would just add to the frustrations.

eh... just on pure talent its hard for Seattle to pass up, and any non seattle fan would have a hard time believing we wouldn't do this deal.

but as Wiff says, (and I agree with him entirely), the package being acquired just don't fit Presti's rebuilding plan. We finally have a GM with the guts to go into a full rebuild, and I support Sam entirely. I am not interested in compromising that plan, despite the fact that we do win this deal on a talent to talent basis.

Elaborating on the sonics viewpoint - we will trade our current talent for expiring's and the talent we want back is in PICKS. Presti seems to want to rebuild this team on future talent - or young talent.
