This isn't my trade, asdf1223 at the Sonics board posted it but I think it's reasonable and wanted to hear what Spurs fans think.
Kurt Thomas
2 2008 seconds(our own,best of the other 3)
San Antonio sends:
Brent Barry
Fransisco Elson
draft rights to Tiago Splitter
I would think Thomas would really help you with another run to the finals.
All the active players are expirings so no one is taking back long term crap contracts.

spurs pass, but its not an outright dismissal. no reason to give up on a potential bargain pick-up like splitter and lose barry (who is once again near the top in the league in ts% last i looked) for a half year rental of thomas. but barry isnt the deal breaker here, its splitter. spurs dont have much youth, and cant go selling what little they do have.

I was thinking of the same trade. I think its a very good idea, and given the Spurs recent struggles I think they will have to be looking to make a move if they dont turn things around.
Consider that barry will be waived and can return to the Spurs in time for the playoffs and i think they would have to do it.

Actually he is the best big on the Sonics, easily. He just can't give you extended minutes.
I can see why Spurs fans would be reluctant. Is one more ring worth the potential of a young big?
At this point I would have traded Shawn Kemp as a rookie if the Sonics could have won just one ring.
But I guess when you win one every other year maybe the novelty wear off, I don't know?

not really. at first, maybe there were some more rabid (ie, argentinian) fans that held this view. but most spurs fans simply wanted a solid rotation player or a half decent pick for the guy. and after 3+ years of contract issues and such, his value was rather low. most spurs fans by that point just didnt want to have to take back a dead contract or dead player. one fan proposed deal that got a lot a attention this past offseason was a deal centered around barry and scola for a s&t'd nocioni (with filler being added as needed).
besides, splitter doesnt have the same contact issues scola had (his buyout was high this last summer, but will be very low this coming summer). plus the spurs will no longer be up against the luxury tax line, thanks to nearly 15 mil coming off the books this summer. and with both elson and horry on the way out, there will be a place on the team for splitter and his particular skill set.
