Kings-Blazers

Post#1 » by Smills91 » Tue Jan 22, 2008 2:09 pm

Kings deal:
Mike Bibby

Blazers deal:
Raef LaFrentz
Sergio Rodriguez
lotto protect 1st round pick 2008

Why for the Kings:
It adds a young replacement to back-up Beno and adds an extra pick for next year to help rebuild.

Why for the Blazers:
They get an upgrade at PG at minimal costs. It looks like the Blazers are strong enough to make a playoff push and having a vet/battle tested PG run the show down the stretch could be extremely beneficial for the many young players on the rosters.

Blazers should demand the Kings take Miles if they are giving up Sergio AND a first round pick for a player that doesn't fit in with the future of the franchise.

Sure, take Kenny Thomas back then.

+1

No way we take on the second coming of Damon at 28mil for this year and next when we're giving up Sergio, a contract that expires at the same time as Bibby's (and Raef won't complain), AND a first round pick?!

I absolutely agree that the Kings would have to take on Miles' contract to make this work. With the way we're playing, why mess with a good thing for a guy who would probably be a bad fit with Roy? Maybe we're a team that's one piece away from a championship, that piece isn't Bibby (Oden) and it won't come this year or next.

Neutral fans: Kings should get Jack(upgrade) over Sergio out of this particular package.
Blazer fans: Kings HAVE to take back Miles to make this work.

Hmmm...????

So to appease Blazers fans this is the new proposal that, at least what I think, would work:

Kings trade:
Mike Bibby
Kenny Thomas

Blazers trade:
Raef LaFrentz
Jarrett Jack
#1 pick
Darius Miles

Kenny Thomas for Darius Miles is a wash, as both have contracts ending in 2010, and both will never see playing time in Portland with all the depth.

So that makes the deal LaFrentz, Jack, and a first rounder for Bibby. No thanks. Blazers have great chemistry now, and Blake is doing a fine job as the PG. Jack, too is a great spark off the bench, and that #1 pick can be vital to move up in the draft this off-season.

It's a wash, but the difference is Kenny COULD play minutes, whereas Darius Miles is as good as a spoiled bag of rice on the bench. So it improves frontcourt depth minimally in case of inury to either Outlaw, Frye, Aldridge OR Pryzbilla.

The whole Miles/KT thing is rediculous.

But the Bibby to Portland thing is only slightly less so.
The Blazers are about 2 to 3 years ahead of where the Kings want to be right now, they have a collection of good young talent and are moving in a good direction with Oden in the wings for next season.

I don't imagine Portland has interest in Bibby as a player. His value would be his ending contract, and to take advantage of this Portland needs to send Miles without taking back salary for 09/10.

Something like:

Miles
LaFrentz
Jack/Rodriguez
Draft Pick

for

Bibby
Moore

That deal can't be very appealing to Sacramento. I don't think these teams are good trading partners. Portland just isn't a good destination for Bibby. He'd be worth much more to some other team.

Take out the 1st rd pick and the Blazers think about it. Theres no reason to trade a young PG (21 years old) with plenty of potential AND a 1st rd pick for an aging PG who's past his prime. If you want a short contract and a young PG with potential, then this might be something for the Blazers to look at, but other than that, the Blazers just have no incentive for this trade.

The Blazers are doing fine with Blake as their PG. He doesnt turn the ball over and hes shooting the ball very well (6th in the league in 3pt %). If we brought in Bibby, we're taking minutes away from either Blake or Jack and risking killing what is incredible team chemistry. Maybe value wise its fair, but from the Blazers perspective theres just not a lot of reason to give up that much

I agree with what Red Robot and Fitz said. Portland's interest in Bibby is more for his contract than his steadily declining on-the-court production. So in order to get Portland interested, the Kings would have to take Miles... and not sending back Kenny Thomas (or any other equally bad 3 year contract that they have).

Understandably, that will make a lot of Kings fans less inclined to do this as they still think Sacramento is going to create some cap space for 09 (something I still don't particularly buy myself, but that's neither here nor there).

What about this 3 way trade by including NY?

Portland Trades

Raef LaFrentz
Darius Miles
Sergio Rodriguez

Portland Receives

Mike Bibby
Malik Rose

Sacramento Trades

Mike Bibby
Kenny Thomas

Sacramento Receives

Raef LaFrentz
Darius Miles
Sergio Rodriguez

NY Trades

Malik Rose

NY Receives

Kenny Thomas

I didn't add extras like picks or cash at this point, but whats the overall feel of this trade for everyone?

I really don't think Kevin Pritchard is interested at all in trading Sergio. Especially for Bibby. There is a half way decent shance that Miles will simply retire as well. If that happens then Portland wouls simply be trading for nothing AND giving up Sergio in the process.
