I'm 100% on board with loading up an up and coming Eastern Conference rival that everyone says is a PG away from being legit and giving them a 5 that can start and come off the bench when the don't have a legit 5 ... sounds good to me that a team with a boat load of 2's, 3's and 4's should be handed the 1 and 5 they need

But ... JJ's an all-star! Just like Magloire.

Yeah that may be true, but what do we do when (notice how I didn't say if) TJ becomes injured again? Do you honestly want Dixon and Dmart running the point?
With that trade we could go from the best PG tandem in the league to a potential worst.

NO but ill give you rasho dixon graham dmart joey . joe johnson is not an impact player but gets paid like one. why the hell would we give up a winner for a career loser.

I would deal JJ for Jose in a second. ATL would never do it though, not a chance. They would rather get a Watson, Udrih or ridnour, and pair him with JJ than start Jose and then be lacking a go-to-guy.

TJ-JJ-Moon-Bosh-Bargs that's insane....

Ok, because the Raps, one of the worst teams for nearly their entire existance, are winners? What has Jose done in the NBA?

If Lebron gets injured, the Cavs have the worst SF rotation int he league.

If Dwight gets injured, the Magic have the worst PF/C rotation in the league.

If Kobe gets injured.....

If Deron gets injured....

If Paul gets injured.....

TJ is NOWEHERE NEAR the level of those players, but the same hold true for most teams. If you have a good player starting at a crucial position and they go down, you are going to be left with a crappy rotation behind him. There is areason most teams are structured this way. It's for balance.

Toronto has 2 above-average starting PG's on their team. If they ever hope to get some balance, they need to deal one of them for an above average SG/SF or C.

That said, Jose will not net you Joe Johnson. Not even close.

ATL might consider it if they move Speedy Claxton to us for Kris Humphries or something (bad contract for good + productive contract)

but i'm pretty sure most ATL fans do not see how Calderon is valuable (they say they are), but its too risky for them at this point with Calderon simply leaving via RFA this summer

Umm, let's not forget TJ is WAY MORE injury prone than those guys. Seriously, it may be time to admit that we'll never be able to rely on keeping TJ as a starting PG (nor trading him for anything but cap space) because of his injury. He's had 2 stingers this year and he's one more away from retirement.

If we keep him as a backup guard playing 20 mins a game there's a good chance he can have a long healthy career. As a starter playing 40 minutes a game he doesn't have the durability to stay healthy for a long stretch.

Calderon is our future PG. It sucks to tie up so much money at one position, but we'll have to be happy that atleast it's wasted on the best backup PG in the league (ford) and not a Larry Hughes, Kmart type.

Well he leads the league by far in assist to turnover ratio. He's on pace to become only the fifth player in league history to average over 50% from the field, 40% from the land beyond and 90% from the line. I would say those accomplishment are arguably more impressive than anything JJ has done.

You're completely overlooking that main point.....TJ Ford is a MAJOR injury risk whereas guys like Lebron, Kobe, Dwight, Paul, etc. are not!

Atlanta wouldn't do it for the simple fact that they love what Joe Johnson brings. He's a uber versilte player who can play the 1-3 if needed. People forget how damn good he is as a scorer and a assist man. He put up 20-5-5 on any given night. Hell I would start him at the point and go with JJ/Parker/Moon/Bosh/Bargnani or Rasho looks pretty damn good to me with Dixon (for now)/Delfino/Kopono/Humphries/Rasho or Bargnani as our backup squad.

We would have one deep team with lots of options on offense and that starting 5 would be up there with the best of 'em in the league. If there is anybody in Atlanta I would want now for cheap it's Sheldon Williams or Childress since their values are kinda low.

It's interesting this thread kinda backfired on me.

I have to admit I had an ulterior motive for this thread. I was curious to see if all the 'Calderon got snubbed' sentiments would be present if there was an opportunity to trade Calderon for JJ.

I thought most fans would ship JC to Atlanta for JJ in a second, which would highlight that Raps fans thought higher of JJ than JC, and if that was the case why would they have a problem with JJ being in the all-star game instead of JC since we all think he's a better player.

It turns out that I was wrong. Raps fans legitimately feel that JC is an all-star calibre player and wouldn't trade him for another all-star/fringe all-star unless it greatly improved their chances at getting to the next level.

I agree with many posters here. JJ is a nice player, versatile, and a legit scoring option. That said I don't think his addition would turn the Raps into an instant contender, so why make the move? At best he could help us get deeper in the play-offs at worst he could jeopardize the existing chemistry and put the team a step back. Why risk it when you have a known commodity that is yielding you wins?

Thanks for the responses, very interesting indeed.

Atlanta certainly says no. They fill one roster hole by excavating another huge one, and then are stuck trying to extend Josh, Josh and Jose all at the same time. Just doesn't work.

I would imagine Toronto says no too, unless they have another PG up their sleeve. Although they sure win out in value, they screw up their roster with Ford still unavailable.
