Portland is looking to pare it's roster and upgrade the PG position. Ben Gordon fits in perfectly next to Roy.

Portland get's another mid 1st round pick which they can package with their own to get to move up in the draft or they can get two solid players mid-first round.

Diaw is a solid team player who would do well in Portland's system. Cardinal would be bought out. Taking on his contract is not such a big deal since all the holes on the roster would be filled. Additonally it looks increasingly likely that Miles will take medical retirement and free up a lot of salary cap space before 09. Duhon has an ending contract.

This is really 2 trades combined. One between Portland/Memphis/Chicago and one between Portland/Phoenix.

Overall, I think it is too good for Portland to be realistic.

Not huge changes, but I think they balance it out a bit.

The 6'8 Miller has quite a bit more value than the 6'3 Gordon, and Jack is more valuable than Duhon as well. This deal is not an outrageously protected 1st away; it's either Noah or Thomas away.

MEM can get expirings for Miller/Cardinal, I believe.

PHX gets almost as good a deal as CHI, especially in light of the Bibby deal.

Aside from overpaying, Portland's side is fundamentally flawed. They are not going to scrap their '09 cap flexibility plan for Ben Gordon.

I think it has to be one big trade for salary reasons. And Chicago does really well in this deal.

If Memphis can't get expirings this year for MMiller and Cardinal, then I think they will wait until draft night to move them.

The suns don't have much incentive to do this. They give up Diaw and the Atlanta 1st and get back not much of anything that does much for them. Blake helps a little off the bench but enough for Diaq and a 1st? Not too sure.

this leaves portland with a backcourt of Roy, Gordon, Duhon, and Rodriguez. Far too small and far to thin to compete now or in the future.

Furthermore, portland trades frye and lafrentz...which cuts deeply into their C/PF depth, for the purposes of adding a 4th SF in Diaw.

and to achieve this poorly balanced roster, portland also gets to give away a 1st round pick, a pair of 2nd round picks, and 3 million dollars. They also take on the practically useles brian cardinal and his absurd contract.

there is no reason to include Phoenix in this trade. Basically, you have portland sending them blake, frye, and 2 draft picks for boris diaw...yuck!
Outlaw, Webster, and Jones all play Diaw's postition, and play it better. It makes no sense.

Duhon isnt better than Jack or Blake. Dude blows.

But I do agree, the Blazers guard rotation would be absolutley fine. Gordon/Roy/Fernandez/Rodriguez/Duhon with Martell and Jones playing spot SG minutes. Absolutley great depth.

and again...even though you seem inclined to ignore it...Gordon's contract status reduces his trade value and duhon's reduces his, especially for portland. There's no way around that. Duhon would be a UFA this summer and Gordon will be RFA. So essentially, it could be...and almost certainly would be...blake + Jack for gordon, and gordon may decide to play for the QO and bolt portland after a little more then a season. And of course, Gordon is injured right now isn't he. Is it the wrist on his shooting hand?...how does that affect his value?

Miller is a big source of disagreement on the Bulls board.

My take is that he is a two year rental. No way he gets extended. That leaves the team in 2010 with nothing to show for this, other than still owing a first round pick.

The Bulls are not in win now mode and aren't really close. If this was the best the Bulls could get for Gordon, I would play hardball with him. Maybe you get him cheap and maybe you lose him for nothing. Even if he walks, the team is still better off because they retain their pick.

Last note, Miller and Jack combine to make $11M. That starts making it hard to retain Luol Deng. If Gordon took a 6 year $60M deal, it would start at 7.7M, or 3.3M less. Bulls would have $62M against the cap, allowing on 5 to 8 million to sign Deng.

For Bulls fans who understand the situation, this is a HORRIBLE trade.

duhon will be a free agent and he won't be resigned so you can cross him off of next year's depth chart.

Gordon's right wrist is injured...the wrist of his shooting hand, so you may have to cross him off this year's depth chart.

Jones could miss 5 weeks with a chronic knee problem so you can cross him off this year's depth chart as well.

Fernandez is still under contract to another team and could end up making 3 million a year more to stay in Europe, so it is quite premature to add him to next year's dept chart yet.

Rodriguez is not close to being dependable yet...if ever...so adding him as an integral part of either year's depth chart is in substantial fashion, wishful thinking.

Webster has yet to demonstrate the ball-handling ability to be a SG in anything but brief situational (or desperate) circumstances.

So I'd say your

Absolutley great depth

is hypothetical at best and fictitious if not.

and of course, gordon's contract mean's any trade for him carries a lot of risk for the team that receives him.

Yeah, ok. I'm not even going to bother arguing this because everyone and their brother knows that Gordon+Duhon is a lot better than Jack+Blake.

It really doesn't reduce his trade value. Gordon didn't ask for an exorbitant amount. The only reason he wasn't extended is because the Bulls are really cheap. He won't take the QO, and he will be signed to a contract commensurate with his abilities this off-season.

You're wrong, treis, and Wizenheimer provided a myriad of reasons this trade is too nice for CHI.
