Hire Larry Brown. We need a proven NBA coach and this guy is the best out there. Yeah he will leave in a few years so get him a heir apparent like Bill Laimbeer. This team needs to learn to defend for real and needs tough love.
Two Trades
Trade away Jamison for a better defender.
Trade:
Jamison and Etan for JO and Foster
Dump a bad contract and get JO for pennies on the dollar. The guy had his worst season and seems to be regressing offensively due to losing some athleticism. However, he is one of the best defensive big men in the NBA. Haywood and JO would form the best defensive frontcourt in the NBA and would shutdown slashers.
Trade Stevenson and AD for Kirk Hinrich.
Hinrich is one of the best defensive PGs out there and is a solid offensive player himself. He does not put up very good %s and had a career worst year this year, but he is the perfect guy to have next to Gil. A tad overrated, yes, but necessary to satisfy Larry Brown who will move Gil to SG anyway.
Draft Chalmers and deadeye shooter Pat Calathes and resign Mason (for 3 years 9 mil).
PG: Hinrich/Mason/Chalmers
SG: Gil/Young
SF: Butler/McGuire/Calathes
PF: JO/Songaila
C: Haywood/Blatche/Pesh
So you surround Gil with four guys who can defend and provide enough offense to make a deep playoff run. The key here is that we will have a bench that will allow the starters to rest and get a ton of points. This team would kind of be like that Philly team that go to the finals that Larry coached. The key here is McGuire's development. He really needs to continue to get stronger and learn defensive fundamentals because he has the potential to slow down a guy like LeBron or Pierce come playoff time. I'm sure having Larry Brown as his coach will help him out a lot.
