AI opting out?

AI has an option until june 20th that he may use to opt out of his contract to sign a deal similar to the Carter deal that was done last year, if he does what is he worth in a sign and trade deal, both for the contract and what other teams are willing to give to the Nuggets for him.

at his age,if he opts he takes about a $6 mill pay cut-at least. Even then he's a quick fix at high$..not a guy to build on. The Nugs can get SOME payback..but they won't be thrilled.

Who really might want him and his huge salary? Would he be willing to take a cut to get more years? Interesting question. Also, how would Denver react to that? I doubt he'd go somewhere that had cap space but probably wouldn't be contending (Memphis?). What about going back to Philadelphia, now that King (and LB) are gone?

Even if that were true, which I very very very much doubt...he can do THAT next year. Why give up $14M+ to do it now?

The salary would be a big deal, but the length of the deal would be even more critical. I think the Vince Carter deal was bad, but the Iverson deal could be worse.

I personally dislike Baron Davis for his injury history and his attitude forcing his way out of New Orleans. However, Iverson turns 33 on Friday. I'm impressed that he's such a competitor that he started all 82 games this year, and averaged over 40 mpg, but his games played had declined each of the last three years. As I can attest, when you're on the wrong side of 30, it takes longer and longer to heal damage. And at 175 pounds, Iverson is going to take a lot of damage.

Moreover, his game is based on speed, not size. That will decline regardless of injuries -- injuries will only hasten it. Its not like he's a big guy (think 7' 1" KG) that will still be an effective player even if he loses a step.

Iverson is a warrior, and I respect his game a lot, but I don't see many teams that would commit money to him. I don't think he has a lot of trade value, and should stick with the Nuggets.

If it is as you suggest....the Clippers give him 4yrs/$56mil.

Trade Maggette + Tim Thomas.

Thomas is gone in 2 years and they sign Maggette to something like 4yrs/$40mil.

Does that work for you? :dontknow:

That doesn't really work, because the Nuggets have no use for Maggette. He is a SF, right? And even if he could play SG, one of the purposes to trading AI is to get JR starting like he should be.

If Maggette could play point, then it could work, lol.

Why would the Nuggets take back a bad contract in Thomas? I do not see the Nuggets helping another team sign him, to the detriment of the Nuggets, therefore I don't think this deal works for them.

What about someone who could send back a point (along the lines of a TJ Ford) and would be willing to take some of AIs salary off your hands? Perhaps send back a few expirings to balance out the deal? This would allow you to start JR and would give you a solid point guard which maybe your teams biggest lack. There may be some other teams out there (than Toronto) which might fit into this category.

I think the Nuggets will be looking for a Pg on a decent contract and a solid big, and expirings if needed to balance out the deal. So yes that would be a start.

I think the Nuggets are over a barrel. Most of their team sucks and gets paid way too much for too long. They need to dump just about everyone except Melo and start over. The only valuable trade bait they have are Kleiza, AI and Camby.

So a team that won 50 games sucks? While I would agree that Nene and kMart are overpaid, the Nuggets are top 5 in the league in talent. As for valuable trade bait, I think you are missing a couple pieces that have a ton of value, one of which is among the highest in the league.

Denver beats all the bad teams because they have so many good athletes. But when they come up against good teams like the Lakers this year or the Clippers just 2 years ago, they get pounced.

I think you should keep Melo and do a major overhaul. Maybe buyout the terrible contacts. The 3 guys I mentioned are good, but you're going to need to give to get.

Depending on what you consider a bad team, Denver wins 57 to 60 games if they beat all the bad teams this year. Lakers were definitely better this year, but their coach was a lot better too. Plus Denver isn't built or coached to win in the playoffs. And the Clippers series was sad, the starting line up was something like Najera/Melo/Camby/Buckner/Miller.. only one player the Clippers needed to play defense on, lol.

You are right, they do need a major overhaul. They need to get more jump shooters on the team, and play through Melo in the post.

Yep. Not to mention defense...and stop with all the stupid mistakes.

They are a fun team to watch but they aren't built to win.

Actually they are a horrible team to watch. Their half court offense is painful on the eyes, lol.
