What would the Bull have to give to dump Jerome James?
What would the Bulls need to give to dump Jerome James' contract on a team with cap room?
His contract is expiring, I'm think the 26th pick this year, and enough cash to cover whatever the Insurance won't cover. With the other team sending back a conditional 2nd rounder.
Any other thoughts?

Thats not enough for a team to give up 6.5 million dollars in caproom. I don't think that the 15th pick would even be enough. Seriously- you can get bargains in FA this offseason for once. You can certainly get someone better than a James Johnson with 6.5 million in caproom.
IF OKC or Memphis didn't find good uses for their money this offseason then maybe they would accept this kind of deal- but that would be long after the draft.

Although insurance covers part of the deal, the whole contract counts against the cap (not to mention wasting a roster spot). You would have to find a team that has no other plans for about $6M of their cap...and I doubt there's many of those. Memphis is a possibility if they want to save up for 2010 instead, but I'm not sure the 26th pick is enough, and you won't get anything back.

They don't have cap space this year.
I believe Insurance covers 80% of his deal, I know that it still counts against the cap. Insurance would pay 5.2 Million worth of the contract and would leave 1.3 Million left to be paid. The Bulls could then offer James' contract, the 26th and 3million in cash which would in essence we would be paying them nearly 2 million to occupy a roster spot and 6.5 in non-2010 cap space for a year, and giving them the 26th pick which does hold more value then usually IMO since this is a weak draft at the top but with a lot of guys that could go from mid lotto to end of the first
I would think in this economic landscape, getting A. a cheap rookie locked up for a few years, if you draft right thats a good value. B. Get nearly 2 Million dollars, just for using up less then 7 million of non-2010 cap space would be a deal a team under the cap in need of cash would do. Btw that expiring could hold some value on it's own in a trade if Bosh, Amar'e or some other star wants out.
The Bulls could also throw in an additional 2nd rounder to match the one the team under the cap would have to give up.

Maybe think about the #16 then. Not the #26. Late picks in a weak draft may be worth less than 2nd rounders in the same draft.

That expiring would hold significantly less value than the capspace Team X is giving up to acquire it, which could also be used in the same trade.

Remember that the sonics got TWO first rounders to take on a far superior player in Kurt Thomas a few years ago. (and that wasn't even costing them caproom- that was absorbed by a trade exemption) If you are willing to absorb contracts you can get crazy deals. Marcus Camby for a second rounder is another example. Lots of teams want to dump expiring contracts. Think about the Wizards wanting to dump Etan Thomas to avoid the Tax or the Bucks wanting to dump Ridnour to make room for Sessions and Villanueva. You aren't offering anywhere close to what it would take for a team to give up 6.5 million in caproom.

I just offered that, I'm asking what would it take to dump his contract.
I didn't think Kurt Thomas was an expiring when he was traded for two first.

Re: What would the Bull have to give to dump Jerome James?
Shrink posted a pretty cool deal based around Jerome James a week or so ago. I think it may have been...(off the top of my head)
MN IN: Jerome James, Ridnour, Williams, #16, #10
MN Out: Miller, cards
MIL IN: Stack
MIL Out: ridnour, #10
DAL IN: Miller
DAL Out: Williams, Stack
CHI IN: C. Smith
CHI Out: Jerome James, #16
For CHI:
Opens up uh...4m in difference between james and smith, plus the cap hold on the pick.
So +5m in space to resign gordon.
For MIL
Opens up 4.5m in space plus cap hold on pick. so 5.5m in space to resign CV + Sessions.
For dal:
Same thing posted for months
For MN:
A bajillion picks in teh bad draft

Re: What would the Bull have to give to dump Jerome James?
I forgot about that one. Bruce informed me, correctly I think, that I need to do trades one at a time. I make trades that create value by putting the right pieces where they are needed most. However, in mutli-player deals, I create value, give the others something positive, and rake in all the value for MIN. I think its a bad habit, or at least I need to do them seperately so teams don't say, "Well, yeah we're improving, and you're improving, but you're improving way too much!" Three and four team trades multiply the value available.
For example, in a 3-teamer like this with MIN-WAS-MIL, he pointed out (I'm pseudo-quoting to save time).
Anyway, its all subjective. I think each team likes what they take in more than what they give out. But they may want more than just a good deal.
For example, in a 3-teamer like this with MIN-WAS-MIL, he pointed out (I'm pseudo-quoting to save time).
In 2 trades
theres 8 points of increased value per trade
trade 1:
MN gets 5
MIL gets 3
trade 2:
MN gets 5
WAS gets 3
(nobody says anything)
If its done in a single trade:
theres 16 points of value
mn gets 10 total
was/mil each get 3
(they yell at me for being so unfair)
Anyway, its all subjective. I think each team likes what they take in more than what they give out. But they may want more than just a good deal.

Something along the lines of Hinrich and James for Dalembert and Green.
Trade #5074631.

Re: What would the Bull have to give to dump Jerome James?
Basically any team would be willing to take Jerome James on if they
1). Get something in return (draft pick)
2). Remaining cash on his contract
It will count against their salary cap which is set at 55 million this year but some teams are not going to spend that money this season. Since Jerome James is an expiring, and 80% of his contract is covered by insurance, then all they need is #1 and #2. The teams under the cap are
Memphis Grizzlies - $20 million
Detroit Pistons $16-17.7 million
Atlanta Hawks - $13-14.6
Oklahoma City Thunder - $10 million
Portland Trail Blazers - $9.1-16.7 million - the latter if they cut Travis Outlaw and Steve Blake before the end of June.
Utah Jazz - $9.0 million - if Boozer, Okur and Korver all opt out.
Sacramento Kings - $7.2 million
Toronto Raptors - $7 million
I think the Kings, TrailBlazers, Grizzlies are 3 teams that could be interested in taking him on
