Mike Miller and #6 for Luol Deng

Post#1 » by DowJones » Tue Jun 9, 2009 12:58 am

Chicago gets to clear some more cap-space for 2010 and they get a young player in the process. Plus Mike Miller would fit in well with the current Chicago team for a year. Minnesota gets a pretty good, young player on a reasonable contract.

"Reasonable" contract? Just short of 10 million a year? That's about as reasonable as Hinrich's 9 million plus a year, which isn't very reasonable. And there's no way I'd throw in the 6, that's overpaying for Deng like mad.

If Deng didn't have injury concerns, I'd say Miller + 28 or MAYBE Miller + 18 would be almost reasonable. But still wouldn't do it.

IMO Luol Deng will be better than anyone you get at #6, but oh well.

I can't see Minny do this. Chicago might. (Probably does). But Minny won't.

1) Luol Deng takes up cap space in 2010.

2) Luol Deng only improves the Wolves just a bit. The improvement is not large enough to justify giving up their 2010 pick as well as their 2009 pick. (Their 2010 pick is top 10 protected so if they do decent next year, they lose that pick.)

3) Luol Deng is also overpaid. Good player, but overpaid while also a bit injury prone.

What does Minnesota care about 2010 cap-space? Do they think a big-name FA will go there or something? I don't mean to flame them but come on.

With the way Deng has struggled with injuries and consistency the past 2 years, I just don't think he's worth pick #6 and a productive expiring like Miller.

From what I've been told, someone who is a 2nd tier FA is what they're hoping for. Obviously, DWade and Lebron are not going there. They're looking at some of the other FAs who are still also pretty good. Maybe overpay them to go to Minny, but I can see that plan working.

As many Wolves fans have been saying over and over and over lately, "No free agents will go to Minnesota, so you have to take our overpaid, mediocre players off our hands" is not a good argument for why a crappy trade is acceptable.

Especially in this case, where Deng's talent and production isn't nearly close to what we get from just keeping Miller and drafting one of Harden/Evans/DeRozan etc. Not to mention the fact that cap space can be traded; you know, like you're trying to do now, but in our case, we'd like a fair deal.

Deng has five years worth of $10 mil+ contracts

10,365,000 11,345,000 12,325,000 13,365,000 14,275,000 = $61 million!

Compare that to the 2008 signings:

Arenas $16.2,
Dwight Howard $15.2
Deron Williams $13.8
Chris Paul $13.8
Bynum $12.5
Bogut $12
Al Jefferson $12
Iguodala $12
Monta Ellis $11
Granger $10.2
Josh Smith $10.8
Okafor $10.5
Kevin Martin $9.7
Biedrins $9
Devin Harris $8.4
Calderon $8.2
Jameer $7.7

I would not even give an expiring for Luol Deng

C'mon. You're on the boards enough to know that raw cap space is an incredibly valuable trade commodity. It doesn't have to be used for free agents.

Good Lord this is terrible.

And it sounds like DowJones doesn't understand the benefits of cap space.

Um, don't flame me for saying this because I know Chicago fans think he will recover and be a stud, but the pick is going the wrong direction. You have to give incentive to get rid of Deng.

I wouldn't give Stack for him without incentive.

Dude, your "D-Train's" wheels (knees) could easily derail the train, no thanks for that risk.

Is Luol Deng even worth Mike Miller?

I'd say that Cardinal plus the 18 would be closer to Deng's value if Minnesota wants to take on his contract. Anytime a guy is coming off of injury his value is total crap until they can show they are healthy

Deng, #16, #26 for Miller, #6 could make sense, IMO

No it doesn't make sense. Wolves want nothing to do with Deng.

Kahn's on record of saying he sees a 17 month process. Which brings us to the start of the 2010 season. That also means no stupid quick fix trades that screw over our future.

Deng is of interest, but those years of $12-14 mill? OUCH. Makes Maggette look econo.
