Kevin Prichard was very crafty and turned Tyrus Thomas and Randy Foye into LMA and Brandon Roy for basically nothing.

Portland acquires the Draft rights to LaMarcus Aldridge and a future second-round pick from Chicago for Viktor Khryapa and the Draft rights to Tyrus Thomas.

Boston acquires Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and a second-round pick in 2008 from Portland for Dan Dickau, Raef LaFrentz and the Draft rights to Randy Foye.

Minnesota acquires the Draft rights to Randy Foye from Portland (via Boston) for the Draft rights to Brandon Roy.

That year Portland had the worst record in the league, but ended up with the 4th pick. Traded number 4 and Khryapa for number 2.

Basically they got the extra first rounder for telfair and being willing to absorb the extra year of Raef's contract. Boston was able to get KG because they had Ratliff's expiring contract. If they still had Raef that wouldn't have happened

From what I've heard, Minnesota wanted Randy Foye all along and had a deal in place with Houston to pick Foye and trade him for Roy.

Portland traded above Houston took Foye and traded him for Roy.

That story always makes me happy when I think about it.......

Houston would have been ridiculous with Roy........

Unless they traded Roy for Battier......... wouldn't Memphis be deadly then.

This is wrong on both accounts.

LMA wasn't our pick. The Blazers had the worst record in the NBA but like most ever team with the best chance to get the #1 pick, we fell to #4. On draft night, the packaged Khryapa with the #4 (Thomas) and sent it to Chicago for the #2, which ended up being Aldridge.

And as the Boston pick goes, Randy Foye was taken with the Boston pick. Roy was originally picked by the Timberwolves. The Blazers and TWolves then swapped picks and Portland through some cash McFails way to get the deal done.

The question was how did they get the two high picks in order to end up with LMA and ROY not the events

I doubt they would have traded Roy for Battier......

If they really didn't want anyone, they would have traded the pick prior to the draft IMO.

But to answer your question.......Memphis would be better but since they got Roy, they wouldn't have gotten Conely and Mayo also........

I wonder if they would have traded Pau if they landed Roy instead of Gay though......

I had a similar thought like that before with the Blazers picking Chris Paul instead of trading down for Webster and a PDX fan thought they'd still have ended up with Roy/Aldridge the next year as well. What's your thoughts on that one?

-----------------

That's a good question on the Gasol thing I think that still happens though because Pau IMO is a sidekick more than the man and Roy might have been the man to lead but would they have done enough for that deal not to go down?

I think Spykes missed post #2 in this thread where that was all explained.

If we landed Paul, I honestly don't know how things would have turned out. The GM that drafted Paul was replaced by Pritchard the following season. I doubt Paul would have gotten Portland out of the lottery. I think they would have been a bit better team but not much. I honestly believe that Pritchard would have ended up with at least one of the two but there is just to many if's involved to lay a concrete argument.

If Paul gave Portland a few more wins, a whole bunch of things could have changed.

EDIT: A Paul/Roy back court would have been absolutely ridiculous though. If we got Paul, I think the team would look completely different.

Getting OT but IMO, I think ppl tend to overrate a Paul and Roy back court. I know it's just the Allstar game but in 2 of them played together the chemistry doens't look that great between those two. I think the real winner of a back court would be Deron Williams and Brandon Roy. Now that would be a ridiculous 1,2 guard punch.

I am over rating it because I said it would be ridiculous?

I think Deron would be a better fit with Roy also, but it doesn't change the fact that Paul would have been ridiculous.

If we were to pick a PG in that draft, I'm sure it would have been Paul over Deron so thats why I stated Paul instead of Deron.
