It allowed them to learn how to apply the skills to the teams system. The coaches there will get instructions from the Heat on plays and how Jovic will be used in those plays and get him repetition and coach him up on how to run those plays. If the coaches there see that he is sufficient they will advised the team that he has sufficient understanding and can play that role. If he is truly that good he will not be there long.fishfuego. wrote:shanedude wrote:Why waste Jovic in the G League? Trial by fire I say. Development is a phrase widely used, but it plays a different roles in different situations. An offensive raw but athletic player may find itself in the development league. A severely injured player may find itself in the development league for many reasons. However, these Euro players hardly need skill developments once they find their ways to the NBA. They are pretty skill tested.
Herro was an 18 years old rookie that immediately found himself on the team’s daily rotation due to his matured skills. This dude Jovic has shown an impressive enough set of skills that can be used by the team sooner than later, one being his dribbling ability for a big, his vision from anywhere on the court and his shooting. In other words, all these skills are a reason to send a raw player to the development league to learn. This dude needs no skill learning for the most part, he needs acclimation and chemistry with the actual team.
Herro was a very mature NBA ready player. I mentioned that before we drafted him, that he would likely be a player who has success early. Two Herro got here on a depleted roster that with inexperienced players. Herro was in a completely different scenario the Heat were at a different place roster wise. This team has A LOT of depth. And a huge project in figuring out how to utilize Yurt and Bam together. Spo has a set role for Caleb. And then there is Bam learning to play the 4. There is a lot in the way of Jovic and no reason to rush Jovic.
Adding a skill is usually the summer time. G-league is an opportunity to get full time coaching. Its not a demotion. Its an opportunity to grow faster.
Remember Jovic was 6'8 when he was playing in overseas. The kid has grown to almost 7 foot since. He is not going to be playing the same role that he has experience in. New body new role.

Twix I see your point of view, and I agree with you on such points, except with Jovic. He, just like Herro, seems to have a very matured skill set, from what I’ve seen so far, the eye test shows an impressive vision with passing abilities, a shooting technique that is textbook, and it is created by himself with or without a man on his face, showing he doesn’t need to be spoon fed to initiate such shots, very similar to Herro, while also like with Herro, his position and skills are in demand with the Heat, a 6’11” 1-4 offensive big, and I’m saying 1-4 because the dude can bring the ball up court similar to Bam and has shown an impressive vision with passing skills while not being flat footed, mind you verses NBA competition, not summer league.
That has to mean something when evaluating talent.
Is he a starter material, not yet, just like Herro was not a starter, but for a back up unit with a big that can to a lesser extent do somethings similar to Bam ( as far as dribbling and passing) I think it’s a no brainer.
So IMO, unless the dude flat out sucks the rest of the way, he has passed the eye test with flying colors.
Edit: Also twix, you keep bringing the constant GLeague burn he’ll be getting, but still that’s not building chemistry with the actual team players and it’s not helping the current team needs of mobile big with a skill. We were getting killed inside once Bam went to the bench in many games last season, and if you look at the replays this preseason, Jovic got a few rebounds inside that were contested by the other team’s bigs, and he got the rebound. Size plays a part.
