Where Were You When...?

Post#1 » by Scum Freezebag » Tue Jan 15, 2008 1:35 am

There hasn't been much to cheer about for Heat fans so far, so in conjunction with our 20th anniversary, I thought this thread could be a fun pass time to get our minds off the losses. And if it really catches on, maybe it's something we can continue throughout the season. This is kind of like "Where Were You When Kennedy Was Shot?," just basketball-style. I've picked some random points in Heat history for us to reminisce, bemoan, pontificate, and wax poetic over. And hopefully everyone here will add their own.

Where Where You When...when Allan Houston hit the leaning, last-second game-winner?

I remember yelling at Houston in my living room, getting up real close to the TV, as if that would make him miss as he snaked his way past Thunder Dan and into the paint. Looking back on it now, it

Good, fun thread...

Sadly, I was at game 5 when Houstons broke our heart, just as I was for both the other elimnation games between Heat/Knicks. Losing was bad enough but walking out of there with all those Knick fan was enough to make you sucidial..lol

When we won the chanpionship...same feeling as you scum..I had experienced so much heart break with this team, I just new it wasnt real..I just knew Jason Terry would hit that 3...just knew something would go wrong. But nothing did, and me and about 10 of my friends at a hole in the wall bar went insane with everyone else...I jumped and landed on a stool and had a gash for weeks there...well worth it!

Haha...same thing as well with Caron man...I was in shock as he fell, and I rememebr either we were going to get Glenn Robinson or Jared Jefferies..seeing his emotion was just awesome!

The EJ deal, same thing NBATalk.com was the hot site during that time, but I had mixed feelings, as much as we lost to NY, I loved that team, and felt we were a team capable of winning it all. I was really hoping EJ would take the exception that year with a wink win deal the following summer(when Mash's deal was up)I just felt we gave up too much..and I was right.

G$'s 56 point game was awsome...I remember that being a down season, below expections, but oh what a night!

Now, my turn..lol

Where were you when we pissed away the lead in game 7 of the 2005 NBA ECF's against the Pistons?

I was at the Coral Springs Ale House...man..so depressing...I thought it was our year, I felt it more that year then the 2006 chanpionship season believe it or not. I think Shaq was still way more prodtucive and our role players we're on point with DJ, Dooling, Zo, EJ. Haslem, etc. I really thought if Wade didnt get hurt we win that game and the ring.

Where were you when I think the worst trade we ever made went down? Steve Smith and Grant Long for old vet Kevin Willis?

Didnt really hear any rumors on this, just remember opening the paper and 2 of my favorite Heat player's were gone man...sad day.

Where were you when rookie sensatuon Wade goes at Baron Davis and nails the game winner against the Hornets in game 1 of the 2004 playoffs?

I was on my couch nervous as hell....and all I remember was HOOOLY CRAP, he hit it!!!!

Where you when in game 1 against the number 1 seed Hawks, G$ tips in a ball to win the gamein the 1994 playoffs?

I was only like 14 at the time, and all I remember is running around my house yelling! lol..

A few more...im on a roll..lol

Where were you when we played our first playoff game at home against DA BULLS!?!

Man...how excitting this was. I rememebr we lost, but I think we needed the Hawks to lose too and we still got in..we knew we didnt have a shot, but man! I will never forget Bimbo..Tricky and the guys FIRED UP during intors and we jumped out to that HUGE lead. I remember us up 1 going into the 4th after an Alan Ogg block...we ended up losing, obviously...but it didnt matter. We were the first of the expansion teams to make the playoffs..we were on the rise with Glen Rice, Steve Smith, Rony Siekly, Brian Shaw, Grant Long, Bimbo Coles, Willie Burton etc...I remember us getting Harold Miner and bringing in John Salley that summer, although it didnt work out...we rode a fun ride that time. Wnated to go to the game...but at 12 years old...not much pull, lol ended up watching it at one

LAst one..cause we could all go on forever...

Where were you when we went into the Garden, after the brawl and all the hate in the air, thinking the Knicks would still pull it out, we won?

Never ever forget that game man...I was at one of my best friends house wtahcing it and wanting to KILL Zo when he shot that 3 to basically win the game...when that went in...it was an amazing feeling!! I remember Ike Austin playing like a man posssed...what a game...then winning game 7 was awesome!

On Allan Houston: On my couch....mad as hell. Wondering how the hell I could continue living until November again haha.

On my first Heat game: I'd been a fan since the early 90's, but I'm also a cheap bastard. My first game was 2004 Playoffs Game 6 vs the Pacers. We had a humble rookie who was lighting it up. The little guy was dunking on everyone, no one could stop him......then coach gave Rafer Alston the final shot of the game. He missed and the season was over.

On acquiring Zo: I was in highschool. Matt Geiger and Glen Rice had a good preseason. They really looked like they were improving in that short time with Pat Riley. Then boom they are gone. The last piece of the original "Big 3" was gone. We had Zo. I was happy. He wasn't Shaq, but they picked him right after Shaq, so he had to be good right?? :) I was a Heat fan, so in my mind he was as good if not better than Shaq!

I remember watching all of those games and really thinking we could advance.....but I most remember Keith Askins and Grant Long whopping some Atlanta Hawk ass in that huge brawl  Then the following year Grant Long was traded to the Hawks and I thought it would be kind of awkward for him :)

Was in Dallas for the finals-- was unreal.. Was sitting in a box and just ran down straight to the court saw DJ Irie and Steve Stowe running too and just grabbed them and followed them onto the court! My buddy lives in Dallas and is a diehard Mav's fan but for that night and for the party after at the hotel he was a Heat fan--- he bought a shirt outside the arena that had the Heat and Mavs listed on it so he could fit in at the party..

Never missed anything was at the AAA/Miami Arena for all game situations the only game I missed was when we lost to the Knicks and Sprewell put the towel over his head.. remember watching it in a hotel room in Connecticut.. Had the worst seats ever for the Allan Houston shot but remember at halftime lining up to begin purchasing playoff tickets for the next round-- what a disappointment. Losing game 7 to the Pistons was defintly the worst Heat loss I experienced I just remember DJ pulling up for a shot when he could have kicked it inside to Shaq

I don't remember where I was, but I do remember the shot and the bounce, so I'm going to assume that I was viewing it on the television.

For a long time it gave me nightmares, witnessing an injustice like that. It’s a constant reminder of just how unfair this world can be.I can still hear them taunting him, Silly Rabbit tricks are for kids.I mean why couldn’t they just give him some cereal?

Where were you when they built the ladder to heaven?

On the Allan Houston shot - - I was at the Miami Arena that day, I too was at all the Knicks elimination games (including the Game 7 when we eliminated them)..my uncle and I just sat in our seats and stared at the court for about 15 minutes until the Arena seemed close to empty, we felt empty.

On my first Heat game - the 1990-91 season vs Milwaukee on November 6th, 1990. We lost 106-94. I thought Willie Burton was going to be an All Star after those 1st two games. :wavefinger:

On acquiring Zo - I was at my home EXCITED about Opening Night vs Cleveland the next night. I was a BIG BIG G Money fan so I took the trade hard and kinda had an attitude like "Who is this Pat Riley coming in and trading the best player in Heat history for Zo" - who I remember the year before during a game in Miami toward the end of the season punched the side of the scorers table so hard I heard it from the upper bowl. Now Zo is my favorite player of all time.

When we won the title - On my couch in Orlando, FL. My wife and I were cheering so loud at the TV our neighbors directly below us called the police about a "possible domestic disturbance" - when the cops arrived I told them we were just watching the game and they insisted they step inside, after seeing we were clearly watching the game together and not fighting, they proceeded to hang out and watch part of the 3rd quarter. So here I am on the biggest night in Heat history watching the game with two cops in my living room. Happiness combined with a great deal of relief is how I could best describe how I felt when Wade threw that ball up in the air.

When Caron Butler was drafted - after hearing he was top 3 prospect all summer to have him slip to us was great. I remember thinking "here is our next star player" "our Paul Pierce" - I bought every rookie card I could find. Anyone wanna buy a CB4 rookie?

when we acquired EJ - at my uncle and aunts beautiful home in Keystone Point in NM. On the computer NBATalk ALL NIGHT until the deal finally broke the next day. I thought we had surrounded Zo with the pieces that were going to bring us our 1st ring. I was soooo sure.

when GMoney scored 56 - I was at home it was a Sunday afternoon game. about a week later we played MJ and the Bulls, I brought a sign to the game that said " Air Jordan" (crossed out) - "Air Rice" (I was in 6yh grade give me a break)...Rice scored like 13 MJ scored 40 we got blown out. never talked bad about MJ ever again...ever again.

when Zo announced he was sick - on my couch, I dont think any of the losses in the playoffs to the Knicks, Pistons or Bulls made me feel so horrible as seeing Riley and Zo up there saying THE INVINCIBLE ZO was done. dark dark dark day.

when Zo came back - against the Toronto Raptors at home, I was so excited because it came out of nowhere that he was playing, his first play was a dunk in the lane -- I went nuts!!! ZO was back...

when we drafted DWade - I was sure it was going to be Kirk Hinrich because we needed a PG and we had EJ at the 2. THANK GOD I AM NOT THE ONE MAKING PICKS FOR US. immediately went to the computer to read up on Wade, lots of comparisons to Sprewell and a few to MJ, which at the time I chalked up to HMiner babble. one of the greatest moments in Heat history when Stern announced we drafted Dwyane Wade.

when we traded for Shaq - we were on the big stage now, we had The Diesal, we mattered in the national media now, Shaq rolled in on that big rig, it was the most grand entrance I have ever seen any athlete recieve upon arrival. He promised a title, I believed him, we all believed him, I mean who were we to tell SHAQUILLE ONEAL he wasnt going to bring a title to OUR HEAT -- and he delivered. Will forever love Shaq for that. forever

Where you when in game 1 against the number 1 seed Hawks, G$ tips in a ball to win the gamein the 1994 playoffs?

Maybe it was just brash naivety on my part, but I wasn't afraid of the Hawks. Stacy Augmon, Mookie Blaylock, Craig Ehlo, Danny Manning...they were good, but they weren't scary. They weren't imposing in the same way Boston, or Detroit, or New York, or Chicago, or any of the usual Eastern Conference #1 seeds were. Plus, they just traded their marquee player, Dominque Wilkins, a few months earlier. So I wasn't sweating it.

As for the game, I was thrilled to finally have a postseason win. Rice and Smith were ice-cold clutch. Long and John Salley played Kevin Willis to a standstill. And Bimbo was sensational. The best night in Heat history up until that point.

Where were you when rookie sensatuon Wade goes at Baron Davis and nails the game winner against the Hornets in game 1 of the 2004 playoffs?

A buddy of mine was working a shift at Domino's that afternoon, so I swung by to pick up a free pizza and then came straight home to watch the game. Two things became abundantly clear to me that day: 1) Wade responds well to pressure, and 2) Domino's pizza sucks balls.

Where were you when I think the worst trade we ever made went down? Steve Smith and Grant Long for old vet Kevin Willis?

On one hand, I guess I could begrudgingly understand the reasoning behind the trade. Management felt that the core of Rice-Smith-Seikaly-Long had maxed out and accomplished all that they could. And after we got Willis (coupled with the Seikaly-for-Billy Owens trade just prior), we were bigger, stronger, and more talented as a whole. So I guess I could at least admit that.

But for all other intents and purposes, I hated the trade. Always will. I guess it's just overly sentimental mushy crap, but we gave away two feel-good, long-time members of this team for a guy who didn't pass out of double teams, didn't block shots, and didn't even want to play center, which was the position we specifically acquired him for. And what's worse, both Smith and Long are now considered to be Hawks lifers, both working for the organization. They should be employed by us, not them.

when Zo announced he was sick

I'll be honest, before the severity of his illness sunk in (as well as my temporarily misplaced sense of humanity), my initial concern was how this would affect his playing career.

when Zo came back

It was all over the news a few hours before tip-off, reports of mass ticket requests, reporters standing outside of AAA as deliriously anxious Heat fans filed into the stadium. I was so excited. And I'm a pretty snide and cynical guy, not prone to the dramatic, But I got chills when Zo finally left the bench to check into the game. And fittingly, his first field goal was a dunk.

when we drafted DWade

I was hoping Toronto would do something stupid and pass on Chris Bosh, but with the Big 4 already off the board by the time our turn was up, it really didn't matter that much to me who we'd take, because either way he'd be a role player. Chris Kaman seemed big enough to grab rebounds and take up some space underneath the basket. TJ Ford seemed like he could be kinda fun watching bounce around the court like a pinball. I wasn't even opposed to the idea of taking a flyer on Maciej Lampe and seeing what all the NBADraft.net hype was about.

when we traded for Shaq

I'm happy to say that I read that morning's Sentinel while sitting on the toilet lol. Trading for Shaq...it seemed like such an unfathomable concept. It was like trying to comprehend news that we just traded for the month of October, or the number 12, or something as equally ridiculous and unattainable. It took me a while to fully wrap my head around the magnitude of the trade.

On the Allan Houston shot - - I was at home watching the game with my mom. I surely though we were going to win that game, we had the lead and all we needed was ONE defensive stop, and after-all, we were a defensive team. -- But, the moment that shot bounced in, I didn't know what to do, I was everything you could roll into one; upset, angry, confused, puzzles, frustrated. I remember going into my room and laying on my bed and asking WHY?

When we won the title - In my room watching the game and on RGM. -- Given our luck at times, I was just waiting for a collapse or something to occur, but thankfully it didn't. Once Posey hit that 3 from the corner, and UD got that miss of JW's 3 pt shot and put it back in, I was like "OK this could be for real now" -- The moment that Terry shot went in the air, I could've sworn it was going in, but it didn't and when Wade grabbed that rebound and launched it in the air, all of that frustration/heartbreak we've been through in the past was erased just like that. And that joy of winning a title was unexplainable. It really made going through all of those hard times with this team worth it and that much more rewarding.

When Caron Butler was drafted - I was in my tv room watching the draft and kept hoping that Butler would fall to us, after everything I heard on ESPN and others alike about Butler being the 'real deal' -- And, when he fell to us, I thought we FINALLY have our new building block for years to come.......

when we acquired EJ - I was at my uncle's house when I saw the little ESPN ticker on the bottom saying: The Miami Heat & Charlotte Hornets have agreed in principle to trade PJ Brown, Jamal Mashburn etc for Eddie Jones and Ricky Davis. -- I was ecstatic, because we finally had that 2-Guard we've desperately wanted to pair with Zo/Timmy.

when Zo announced he was sick - I was in my 11th grade Social Studies class, and I begged my teacher to put on the news so that we could hear/watch what was wrong with 'Zo. -- When I heard the news, my heart literally dropped to the floor, and I was basically sick that entire week, couldn't do anything, let alone watch ESPN or the news. Because, all I heard was: Zo this, Zo that......

when Zo came back - I was at home watching in my TV room and literally stood up to watch Zo come into the game off the bench. I was excited beyond beleif.

when we drafted DWade - I was at my cousin's wedding, and called a friend to see who we drafted, and he told me "Dwyane Wade" -- And I was like, "who"? LOL! -- I didn't know much about the prospects except, LeBron, Melo, Bosh, Darko, and Ford. -- I was surprised we went with a 2G, given we already had EJ, and I was kinda confused as to why we didn't go the route of a PG in Hinrich or Ford. -- But, as the season went on and Wade got more and more comfortable with the game, I could see why we drafted the kid, and he's made every Heat fan's life complete in so many ways, that goes w/o saying. -- He helped this franchise rid itself of all that misery and heartbreak we all got acustomed to with the Knicks in the late 90's/early 2000's.

when we traded for Shaq - I was in Atlanta at my aunt's place, and at heard rumors here and there that Shaq wanted to come to Miami, but we'd have to part with Wade or Butler plus another player or two, and immediately said forget it. -- I'd rather build around Wade/Butler instead of trade for Shaq, but Riley worked his Magic, again!
