I don't think the Heat should let Ricky Davis and Jason Williams expire and then not sign Marion to an extension.
There is not enough unrestricted free agents out there. The Heat would have to overpay for a restricted free agent (like giving a near-max deal to either Ben Gordon or Luol Deng) just to acquire a decent player in the offseason.
The Heat should definitely be able to pull off another blockbuster deal before the trade deadline.
With a Ricky Davis and Jason Williams trade package, you can acquire the following players:
- Jermaine O'Neal
He would be brought in to match up against Rasheed Wallace and Kevin Garnett in the East.
- Andrei Kirilenko
He may be more effective at PF in the East. Imagine how good defensively and athletic the Heat would be with Marion and Kirilenko at the 3 and 4. The Jazz have been rumored to trade him in the right deal.
- Elton Brand
I don't see the Clippers dealing him this season, if they would deal him, it would be for something good. Plus, he's the Clippers' franchise man, I think the Clippers give him a chance to turn things around next season depending on how healthy he comes back. Even if he opts out in the offseason for, is he really worth waiting for, forcing the Heat to let go of Marion and getting nothing for Ricky Davis' and Jason Williams contracts?
- Michael Redd
To see him working with the Heat, you'd have to move Wade to point guard. I don't know if that would work, so I see this as the least likely possibility.
A deal for Jermaine O'Neal makes the most sense. It still allows the Heat to sign Marion to an extension, play Haslem alongside of him, and being able to draft either a solid PG or PF/C in the draft. If they draft a PG, they could have Haslem and JO start at the 4 and 5. If they draft a quality big man, they can have him be a quality back-up to Haslem and JO and then pin your hopes on Marcus Banks and Chris Quinn handling the point for the Heat. I say the Heat should go with a PG alongside Wade.
Heat could still sign a decent back-up PF in the offseason to round out the rotation.
PG: Derrick Rose / Marcus Banks
SG: Dwyane Wade / Daequan Cook
SF: Shawn Marion / Dorrell Wright
PF: Udonis Haslem
C: Jermaine O'Neal / Mark Blount / Earl Barron
What next???? Ricky Davis?? Williams??

I wouldn't touch Jermaine O'neal with a ten foot pole. Take Shaq, drop his double teamed impact, drop his FG% by 15% and you've got Jermaine O'Neal. He's earning 20, 21.5 and 23 mill the next 3 seasons.
I don't know why anyone would suggest strapping ourselves to one of the worst contracts in the league with a player who hasn't been healthy in years, after we just fought tooth and nail to get out of that situation.

Good lord Marty...that contract is horrendous!!
Even prior to reading that I was thinking he wasn't worth trading for from a playing perspective alone; injuries or not I have never been a fan of his. Add that contract to the mix and his name should never be mentioned around these here parts again....ever.

If we can't find a taker for Davis and/or JWill, we might do something a little different in order to maximize our cap space. Its possible we package Blount/Smush and maybe even Banks with Haslem in return for an big expiring deal, if there is one out there. It would hurt to lose Haslem, but we would be out of all our bad contracts and well under the cap, even if Marion opts in.

No way we should let marion go. There is no sure FA pickup. Look how well we did this year. You've got to Know a better player will sign to let Marion go. I'd have thought that would put people off coming to the Heat.
I remember when the Dolphins were perennial contenders
