How can we improve our roster (draft picks, cap size,MLE ect)

Post#1 » by RexBoyWonder » Sat Jan 21, 2012 3:51 pm

was wondering what exactly is our situation, hopefully someone who knows his stuff around the CBA could clear things up.

1.Next draft : did we gave away our picks in a past trade? what can we expect to get in the next draft?

2.Cap size : we are over the cap and will be over in the summer, but will we have the MLE? will we have the mini-MLE? maybe both?

my line of thinking is - we are pretty much OK with what we have in the PG position - Mario on a 3 years deal, Cole as backup for a rookie contract, up to 4 years.
BUT, our Center position is still very Shaky. IF Curry (or Pittman) turns out to be useful, could we afford to keep them? (both will be free agents by the end of the season)
if we get to use the FULL MLE we could probably land a real strating center ( possiblly Dalembert, Kaman) and become a real monstrous team, almost flawless.

Dalembert signed a 2 year deal with the Rockets. So idk about getting him next year.

Those are the future picks.

The other stuff, got no clue.

well Dalembert's contract with the Rockets has a team option for next year. so it's quite possible for them to not pick up the option ( for 6.5 mil) and send him back to free agency. that's where our MLE would come very handy. ( i still think he's a perfect fit with us and would upgrade us considerably).

about the draft - i learnd from your link that the Cavaliers got a "option to swap 2012 first round picks" with us. since they are very likely to get a higher pick then us anyway, it's not a big lose. so we'll probably get a very late first rounder.

the big questions remaining is - do we get to have the MLE or the mini-MLE.

It's going to be the mini-MLE

MLE would take us through the luxury tax which we're not allowed to do, so we'll have to use another mini MLE on a center. If Curry pans out, who knows Riley might use it on him. Surely if Curry goes well he won't dog us after all the faith we've paid in him and leave.

What would be cool is if we held Curry's we could give Curry 2 million (Say if he averages 8 + 4 in 15-20 minutes off the bench. And still have a mini-mle to use on another free agent center. Marcus Camby, Tim Duncan? Old but perfect fits.

The upcoming free agency has all good old point guards lol, last season was when we needed our center.

crap..mini-MLE will make it hard to really upgrade the C spot. Curry and Big Dex better get alot of playing time and step up for us.

Or just make a minor adjustment on how we play the C spot to take advantage of our current talent(Dex/Curry). ALL adjustments shouldn't always have to come form personnel changes.

If I'm reading the link correctly, the heat will have its 2012 pick, and 3 2012 2nd rounders?

Not sure about the 2nd rounders but I know the bolded is correct. If it is true that we have 3 second rounders 2 of those can easily be packaged with our first to move up..

This team just needs to continue to develop. With Norris Cole, Terrell Harris, and Dexter Pittman we need those to become dependable role players in the future. Hopefully get another guy in the first round next year that can be developed

We have 1 2012 first round pick, from what I know. We should use that on a C, period. I don't see any other position that needs addressing next year. Getting a rookie wing would be pointless with Harris and Miller backing up SG, Battier and Jones backing up SF and Haslem and Gladness backing up PF. Center needs addressing.

I gotta say that Joel is now full-functional as a backup. He gets blocked a lot, but as an energy guy coming off the bench, his newfound confidence on the offensive end means his man has to stick to him. He can score. Not a ton, but he demands attention now. He need a starting center, and we can give the other minutes to Curry. I think we're straight at all positions really. We're a damn good team, and we're winning it all. Matchups mean nothing, we got SG-SF-PF as a strength against any team. The rest of the league has been put on notice. PEACE.

We have 1 2012 first round pick, from what I know.

Right. Cleveland has the right to switch first round picks with us, but we'll finish ahead of them barring something crazy happening. Therefore I expect our selection to be anywhere from the #26-30th pick.

We also have the Grizzlies 2nd round pick, but it is top 55 protected.

NBADraft.net has us at the 24th pick (Hasn't been updated I'm guessing) and picking some guy named "Fab Melo" from Syracuse. 7 foot, 255 pound Sophmore C.

http://nbadraft.net/2012mock_draft

OTOH DraftExpress doesn't even have that guy being drafted. Huge difference in predictions as of right now.

To improve our roster in the present we need to trade future draft picks if need be since we do not have too many attractive assets aside from Big 3. I personally think we should trade for Amare Stoudemire give up Mike Miller, Joel Anthony, Mario Chalmers & James Jones. We would have to fill 3 roster spots one can go to Eddie House bring him back and get a PG and/or 2 other trey shooters/defenders.

Am I crazy for thinking Eddy Curry is tradeable? I know salary-matching and whatnot, but he's thin enough and Dalembert's age and still has good touch around the rim. Someone is gonna be willing to take him in a package now. I think we trade all our centers for a good center that can play starter minutes. Then we try to draft a good backup SG or PF. PEACE.

sorry but u both are crazy.

the only guys we have with any trade value are the big 3, and Cole and Mario to a much lesser extent. that's it.

Eddy Curry is a proven NBA player he was out few seasons but if he comes into his own again anything is possible.
