Joel Anthony, Starting Center

Post#1 » by SmushedPennies » Wed Sep 19, 2012 11:01 am

I really hate starting new threads, and I posted this excerpt in a different thread already, but I really think its important to make sure everyone sees it, as it could get lost in the clutter.

There appear to still be several people here clinging to traditional, short-range-shooting C's (Joel, Pitt...Birdman, Darko) as our 5th starter. I won't make this a discussion on the effectiveness of playing Bosh at C, or at least needing a player there who can hit 15+-footers, but I just wanted to show everyone who is still plugging Joel there why that won't happen.

For context, this article was written after Joel had been replaced by Turiaf in the starting lineup, a "demotion" not related to any sort of injury or particular matchup concern. Here is an excerpt from the article:

"We have a handful of players that would really prefer to come off the bench," Spoelstra said. "That's the role they like. To get to my second layer of the rotation, there were some things I wanted to move. Ultimately, we always envisioned Joel to be a game-changer off the bench."

Anthony had no problems with returning to the bench. He was a reserve last season before becoming a starter midway through the season. Even then, Anthony said he felt more comfortable playing with the second unit.

"It's not that I was uncomfortable," Anthony said. "It just wasn't what I was used to. I was coming off the bench and then you have to change things up. You just make the adjustment … I think it's a good role for me. I like coming off the bench with that second unit."

As the writer indicates, we'd heard this before from Joel, its been expressed several times by him. This, combined with the Heat's oft-stated new goal to start 5 players who represent some sort of offensive threat, should close the case on Joel. Say what you will about the benefits of starting some sort of C not named Bosh, but even if that happens, it won't be Joel.

Maybe Harrellson plays fantastically and gets himself in there, but I'd think they'd prefer to stay quick and keep him coming off the bench.

Pittman makes little sense starting, and he along with Gladness and Varnado, who aren't even locks to make the team, have so far given us no reason to believe they can start.

Some have said start Haslem at C, which is actually starting him at PF (or you can call them dual 4.5's, switching off matchups like LeBron and Battier each playing 3.5 during the playoffs).

Really not trying to push the "Bosh as starting C" agenda here, as there's already a thread for that. Just trying to help everyone see Joel needs to be scratched off their list.

There are a few people, somehow. Here's one who seemed quite sure of their assertiion:

Rio
Wade
LBJ
Bosh
Joel

Seems familiar? Joel is going to start in the regular season. And I like it. No reason to make Bosh defend Cs all season long. Joel gives us great P&R and rotation defense, as well as energy. I think we need to use him all season for sure.

Another example:

There were a few others recently that I won't scour boards to find. Believe me, this thread was necessary.

I also think Bosh will be our starting center next season. And that's great imo.

In a match up against the Lakers he at least wouldn't have a huge size disadvantage over Howard. But it could become a problem when Bosh gets into foul trouble.
Then, our third best offensive player wouldn't get his usual minutes...

And I always wanted Anthony coming off the bench. He's a great hustle player and can help Miami with his shot blocking.

The OP is right. ALOT of people seem to think Joel should be the starting center.
If you have been keeping up on threads in the Heat board you would see this.

And IMO it obviously shouldn't be the way. Joel is a good defender and probably puts as much out on the floor as anyone on the Heat. But it just isn't working. Joel would make a great 10-20 minute contibuter. Coming into games after players like Howard / Gasol 's have put in 4-6 minutes straight. He can get into them, create forced plays and be a big factor in the paint. It's all about the coaching staff utilizing his abilities. But the Heat have so many different personalities I would not want to be Spolestra and Riley.

Im one the biggest Anti-Joel Anthony fans, but I will promise you Spo will put him back into the starting lineup sooner or later.

I could see Bosh starting but also Joel and UD playing heavy minutes down low. Lewis will get minutes to help spread the floor but Bosh, UD, and Joel will be our centers and each will play heavy minutes. I think Joel will have a decent year.

If the end of last year is any indication, I don't think its even a sure thing Joel gets heavy minutes. He might become a spot minute guy.

Joel should be good for off-the-bench energy and blocks.

Bosh is the starting center, no doubt.
