Lamar Odom summer of 2009

Post#1 » by HeatFanSince87 » Mon Jul 1, 2013 3:59 am

I'm sure most of you remember in 2009 it seemed like we had a real shot to bring Lamar back to Miami. For some reason this popped into my mind, and made me wonder. Had we signed Odom, there really is no way Riley lands the Big 3 the next summer. Obviously, Wade and Bosh or Lebron could have still come but the reality is I don't see how Miami lands all 3. Now if we couldn't land all 3, I wonder if Lebron chooses Miami with just Wade/Odom/Lebron as the "big 3". Thankfully this never happened, but I remember it being the one and only time Riley was budging on his "no contracts longer then 2010" stance.

Could it have been worked out in 2010 we would have been able to sign all 3 and keep Odom? I am thinking yes, but no way we would have been able to bring UD back or Miller in?

It would of been more difficult to pull off. Even thou Riley kept an open mind, Riley didn't really think we were going to get Lebron (dispite the conspiracist think). Pat did think we were going to get at least Stoudamire or Bosh. He was trying to build a big three around Beasley and Wade at the time.

Also remember Pat tried to trade for Stoudamire as well before the big free agency summer came up.

I wanted Lamar Odom back SOOO bad. I hated seeing Wade go god mode every night to be a middle of the pack playoff team.

Kinda sad how far Odom has fallen off since then.

I doubt we would of felt we had the need for Bosh and instead gone for someone like Haywood at the 4th option he was someone we were heavily linked too.

PG - Felton 6m / Chalmers
SG - Wade 17m / Mike Miller
SF - Lebron 17m / Dorrell Wright
PF - Odom 7m / Haslem
C - Haywood 8m / Joel Anthony

I think we could of finished that offseason with a team something like this, I'm not saying I wanted Haywood, but we were heavily linked to him that offseason.

Yeah honestly my 2010 dream line-ups if I recall correctly either featured the following combos:

Booz/ Felton / Haywood
Joe / Booz
Bosh / Felton
Amare / Haywood

+ Wade / Beas / pick (Wanted Bledsoe so bad)

Never did I imagine Bron/Bosh to MIA realistic. Wow, dreams do come true.

Agree! We all hoped and knew we would have the cap space to make a run but as realists, I think most of us felt it would be great to land Bosh, resign Wade and maybe one other guy.

My "dream" 2010 summer was bring Wade back, Bosh and maybe a Rudy Gay or Joe Johnson. Thank GOD Riley had bigger dreams lol..

I really wanted Lamar that summer because I always luved him from his one season here, and felt he should have been an All-Star that season. I thought bringing him in and trying to maybe do an in season trade of Bosh for Beasley was what would happen.

I remembered it very well. I really wanted Odom to come to the Heat that year; he probably would had been an All-Star.

I was kinda ambivalent about Lamar coming back. On one hand, Wade was excited about "bringing him home", so anyhing that made Dwyane happy, I was for. On the other hand, I was all in on 2010 and thought we could score better/higher level contributors.

This is all entirely too familiar. I recall visions of a worst case scenario Felton/Wade/Beasley/Boozer/Haywood lineup too. Anything to keep Wade in town. Even Joe Johnson moving to the 3 or just running a 3 guard lineup. Thank God it didn't come to that. This is much better.

Glad neither came.

I was just about to mention Mo Williams. The world do not know what lead up to us getting Lebron and Bosh. This is why its foolish that Anti-Heat fans believe we did something illegal and that we had some secret deal with Lebron and Bosh years prior.

We were very close to making a trade for Stoudamire the Winter of 2010 before the big free agent period. Because Riley didn't want to take a chance and wait for free agency.

Mo just yanked us around to get a higher offer from the Bucks. He knew we only had the MLE to offer. ****er.

to the topic directly we would have been able to still land the Big 3 but we would have not been able to add Miller and UD. Odom was a worthy gamble at that time and that proves an often forgotten/taken for granted perspective in all this.

Mo Wiliams, Lamar Odom, Amare Stoudamire, Carlos Boozer were all pursued at length by Riles and co. It shows you that some of what has transpired is luck, all good GMs, decision makers, coaches, players have an amount of luck involved. everyone operates trying to do a good job, some more skilled then others, but it takes the stars to truly align to make the haul Riley did.

(obviously not all should be credited to having good luck because Riley is the best at what he does and its not up for debate as far as I am concerned)

but with the 2010 plan, execution, winning results and everybody on Earth documenting every minute it creates what most perceive to be legend. This will help us reload around next summer and Lebron James will have the absolute faith that he is with the right franchise leader to surround him with talent that wins big.

Riley would of easily moved LO once he got word Bron/Bosh are coming. Someone would give a 2nd round the same way he did with Beasley. Riley planned 2010 for some time as he never really added contract unless he saw them as a player he knew he could get out of the deal.

I miss LO! The dude was the man! Had numerous cool times with the dude and I can say he was a class act & always took care of the fans! Never turned them away or didn't stop to take a picture with someone that spotted him.

Didn't he play the Heat as leverage in resigning with the Lakers?
