How much is needed...

Post#1 » by Dupas » Wed Nov 20, 2013 9:16 pm

Yo ma friends. Im starting this topic here because its a thing thats getting to bother me ALOT.
The amount of respect that our superstars are getting is on the low end of the field. What i mean by this? I was just checking some stats and i came to the conclusion that wade and lb are getting alot of no love from the referees.
You took a look at the otherside and you guys like harden and durant doing it their game. I know that wade got a lot of love from the refs in his carreer..but he was actually hacked alot of times also. When i see harden and durant driving to lane..you cant even stare at them . Its foul , 80% of the time. And we also have the verticallity problem of hibbert..it was looking like we where playing hakeem all over again..i just wanted to know whats your thougts about that..sorry for the bad english

Just some numbers (with no context):

LeBron in 12 games: 84 free throws.
Durant in 10 games: 128 free throws.

If Wade (last two years, at least) and James got the respect Harden and Durant got, it wouldn't be a stretch to say we could get 70 wins DESPITE our lack of rebounding and rim protection. James would have set the all-time PER record last year if had drew FTs at the same rate he has his entire career.

Yeah, that's something that pi**es me off.
And commentators saying James often gets those superstar calls is just bullsh*t.
In the game against Orlando, where James tried to draw a foul shooting that halfcourt shot, one of the Magic commentators said something like 'No James, not this time'? WTF? Sure it was no foul, but what he means with 'not this time'?
As if he always gets those easy calls. But that's just not true at all...
The problem(?) is, James always drives to the rim with the intention to FINISH. And because he is able to finish so often, it seems that he doesn't get fouled.
Harden and Durant? The exact opposite. They don't necesseraly want to finish but to sell the foul.
As if you can't do both (finish AND get fouled) in todays league anymore...

I think it is because the league tries to balance things out...would the game be officiated the same there is no way durant would get that many FTs than LeBron

Part of it is Wade and James in particular changing their games to be away from the rim more. On top of that, they both received plenty of ref love in their early years as well and in Wade's case, he just lacks the quickness and athleticism these days to draw a lot of fouls. If he does, it's purely based on being smart and crafty (unlike Harden, who is just a flopping machine).

I'm not worried about the refs though as I don't see some free throws they get as a major advantage. It used to piss me off when people would diminish Wade's or James' great performances by pointing to their FTAs. The only difference I see is that Wade and James had more hard attacks to the basket then Durant and Harden do and those would earn their FTs being crashing into the paint rather than almost forcing the foul call.

Let the season play out first before we make topics like these.

Honestly, this hasnt been talked about enough. People keep insinuating that Lebron, Wade, the heat in general get calls. Are you serious? Durant does drive but there is no way in hell he attacks the rim more than lebron does. And a 40 FT difference? Durant in 2 less games? Not to mention the heat had the least number of FTAs in a 7 game finals series in the HISTORY OF THE NBA! What i want to know is how lebron is not drawing the same rate of fouls he is when he was in Cleveland. LET ME GUESS, public opinion? So public opinion changes how officials ref the games? They really have to be investigating these refs, the integrity of the nba is always in question. Lakers getting every single call last year down the stretch to push them into the playoffs, just disgusting.

Guys like durant and Harden actually look to get free throws and they are able to sell it better, but for big strong guys like melo and Lebron (especially melo) it is much more difficult cause of how they play.

It's been the case since Bron got here. He and Wade just don't get the calls they used to. Bosh did the first year, but not anymore. That's at least understandable because he's primarily a jumpshooter now. Wade also doesn't slash as much as he used to, so that's explainable. However, Bron has been in the post a lot more than he ever was, and gets fouled more than anyone in the league, but he just doesn't get the calls. The excuse is he's strong enough to finish through the contact, so he doesn't deserve the calls. I don't like it.

I guess the ref's logic could be that a foul is only what is enough to disturb the scorer's natural motion or something? So, they could be thinking that even though LeBron does get hit, it doesn't throw him off his path so it's not a foul. Maybe someone could look up the definition of a foul in the NBA rulebook?

Also, even though I'm not a big fan of Melo, the way the refs snake him is disgusting. This guy gets hit so much with no calls.

Edit:

Okay, I looked up the definition of a foul in the rulebook:

a. A common personal foul is illegal physical contact which occurs with an opponent after the ball has become live.

http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_4.htm ... rticleList

Under that definition, LeBron should be getting all the free throws he can handle.

Ref bias has always been in the NBA, but overall it shouldn't be a concern because great NBA teams (like the Heat) are able to overcome it.

Just look at how many times the Spurs were able to get to the line compared to the Heat in the Finals, and yet the Heat were still able to come on top.

As long as we remain the best team in the NBA I could care less about the refs.

Im glad OP brought up this subject.
It will bite the Heat in the rear-end some day.
This is the one thing I have serious issues with the NBA, the officiating system that manipulates the game flow to either balance it or to give an edge (or who knows, maybe something else?).
The Heat as in the last 3 years seem to be at the wrong end of such calls.
