If Greg Oden didn't have knee injuries... he wouldn't be on this team!

I lived in Oregon at the time and my grandfather met Oden before the draft. I was very attuned to what the community thought about him, and I will say there was a LOT of trepidation. His injury concerns were very real and a lot of people were hoping to take Durant. They could foresee another Bowie situation. No one was surprised when he got hurt getting off the couch that summer.

I'm not sure any sane person really expected him to be a Shaq type player. A good, solid big with great defense, yes, but Shaq was way more of a can't miss guy.

BTW when is Oden gonna play? I'm hoping to see him out there.

Wait, did he actually got hurt like that? I can't remember the circumstances of his first injury.

They don't have a timetable, they have specific strength and conditioning goals. They're building up the muscles around his knees, as well as his core strength and hip strength, and his conditioning is not at NBA levels just yet apparently. When he's hit all the goals, he'll play.

At worst he's A Hibbert/Bogut level Defender. He had a bit of trouble in offense but yeah, If he never progressed in Offense he still would of been around Bogut is right now.

He had some "OK" post moves, But im not going to take that he had any "Low post moves" at NBA level. His offensive footwork wasnt great. He still was 7 foot and deceivingly athletic and great timing and understanding on D

watching Oden in high school and at Ohio State was special. He truly was as freak athlete. We never got to see him close to his full abilities in the NBA, and he was still pretty productive.

I dont think he would have ever been a guy like Shaq who singlehandledly carried an offense. He wasnt that guy in high school or college. He just never seemed to have that mindset. The closest I saw to him doing that was vs Florida in the national championship when he just destroyed the Noah/Horford combo when the rest of his team couldnt get anything going offensively. But he could score on the block a bit. And he was a devastating finisher around the basket. If he got the ball in the paint, he was throwing down a powerful 2 handed dunk.

Defensively, is where he really would have been special. He combination of athleticism, timing, and hand/eye coordination when blocking shots was amazing. At Ohio State, it was the "Oden effect".... he was a 1 man zone in the paint and teams didnt even try to attack the basket when he was there because he was so hard to score over. Even at maybe 60% of his peak athleticism during the NBA, he was an intimidator in the paint.

if he had a career like Shaq/Duncan in terms of health, I think he would have been an anchor on a team, but he would have needed another guy to carry the load offensively. But I think he could have been a 18 to 22 ppg kinda guy who just dominated on the glass and defensively.

It's really a shame how everything worked out in Portland. Roy/Oden/Aldridge would have been an awesome core group of guys to build around.

I really do believe Oden had Hall of Fame abilities.... it's really sad his career was ruined by injuries

PS.... how cursed is Portland.... we all know about Walton, Bowie, Oden, Roy..... but even Derrick Rose just had to suffer his 2nd significant knee injury in Portland.... it just sums up the luck of Portland when it comes to knee injuries

EscapoTHB wrote:His main problem was how foul prone he was. But that's something he would have corrected over time(see Roy Hibbert). I have no doubt he would be the best center in the league by now if he hadn't gotten injured. He was a freak, and unlike Dwight, had the makings of a legit post game.

Hibbert hasnt corrected his foul problem refs just choose to swallow their whistle when they see him blatanly jump into a player's body.

The truth is, Hibbert gets away with a lot, especially lowering the arms while he's supposedly "vertical".
If you lower your arms, you enter the other player's space, so if you touch his arms, elbows etc, it should be an automatic foul.
