He is still a good scorer, highly efficient and can play "flashes" of great basketball. With that in mind, he is a broken man, he is made of glass and he is playing conservatively and lazy as well.
In the second unit he can still be efficient and put up 14-16ppg and run the team while giving Lebron a break.
With that big ass opt in though, he is going to suffocate the team going forward and that's one reason why James has opted out, to force Wade's hand.

Re: D. Wade as the starting PG
I always thought his game would lead to transitioning into a full time PG by his early 30s, but with his knees in the condition they're in and the obvious loss in quickness it just wouldn't work without a big time rim protector at the basket. He can't defend worth a ****.

Re: D. Wade as the starting PG
I realize the current meme is that Wade is hot garbage, can barely walk and can't defend. And while I agree that he had a bad Finals, including some lazy D, the truth is that he is still a good defender. His defensive numbers this past season were good and better than a lot of the "elite" perimeter defenders like Tony Allen, Sefolosha and even LeBron. Some will say that is because those guys get the other team's top perimeter scorer, but when you look (on Synergy) at the guys Wade is covering he gets a lot of the top guys too and does pretty well against them.
I don't like Wade at the point because I don't think that is who he is. And I'd prefer a better spot-up shooter there. That said, Wade is not really a terrible 3 pt shooter -- he just doesn't take that many and his % is skewed by a few desperation heaves at the end of periods, etc. He's about a 32-35% 3pt shooter on normal attempts, which isn't great but isn't terrible either.

Re: D. Wade as the starting PG
Only a few seasons ago I thought Wade could be our starting Center with the way he was protecting the rim getting huge blocks against opposing bigs
Well, that hope faded rather quickly

Wade MUST lose 10-15 pounds of weight. Look how Duncan looked 'done' a few years ago, then went on to lose weight and looked in 'late prime' form.
Wade at 6'3.5-6'4 is too damn bulky. I too thought he'd transition nicely as a bully PG ala Billups (but more of a richman's version with less 3pt shooting) but his former elite lateral defense and quickness has deteriorated.

Re: D. Wade as the starting PG
Like Sign5 said it's necessary that Wade lose weight, so that he regains some of his speed and takes some load off his knees. That being said, Wade will not work as a PG he's not fast enough anymore and has spent his whole career as a shooting guard. It would be tough to transition Wade at this stage in his career, and he could continue to be very efficient as he works his post game and develops an outside shot. Wade's off-season plan should honestly be to take care of his knees, lose weight, and learn how to shoot from beyond the arc. He has so many odometer minutes on his body that shooting is going to be his saving grace if he plans to play another few years.

Re: D. Wade as the starting PG
It's strange seeing so many people still so much caught up in positions in this basketball age despite our own head coach specifically saying that the Heat play positionless basketball - it's more of a game of roles and matchups. If someone is playing the role of a playmaker or primary ballhandler, that doesn't mean he has to automatically guard the opponent who has the same role nor the guy who's guarding him. It could be said that Wade has already been the "PG" offensively at least half of his career.
