James Johnson Thread

Post#1 » by Bishop45 » Mon Jul 11, 2016 9:48 am

Favorite of the new signings so far (Lordy help us)

Not great but gritty defensively, not good but decent offensively. Can take advantage of an open lane and make his way to the rim

Covered spots at the 3 for Carrol last year and I believe is titled as a 3/4. Couldn't steal minutes playing under Casey for whatever reason and same case in Mem.

Not a good/great rebounder but aside from that he's decent for the price. Whiteside/Johnson/Winslow could be a decent defensive front court if they learned how to work together. He has a bit of a injury history, not sure about all of it right now, but if in a perfect world we got Bosh back and ready then our Front court with Whiteside/Reed/Bosh/Johnson/Williams/UD/McBob isn't so terrible

Probably not going to do us any favors watching his highlights from his best season but here, and man I hate this guy who makes these

looks like it's all in on the Goran speed train.

What happens when Defences slow the game down?

I like Derrick better.

James is a 29YO journeyman PF that can't shoot or rebound, but is decent overall. He's a guy that should give a few energy minutes off the bench for a contender. We have no real use for him.

Derrick Williams is a very athletic 25YO SF/PF volume scorer, he's very good at getting to the line and just might be able to add a 3 point shot. He's probably never going to "get it", but he has the tools and some upside still.

Overall, not bad or good moves, but Derrick give you some hope while James is just there, distancing you from that high draft pick.

We get a high ass draft pick, that's what happens.

Raps fan here,

You guys could have gotten a steal at 4 million. Let me talk a bit about James.

2015 year
-Amazing. In limited PT he got, he had absolutely spectacular post-game, using strength to bully his way for layups, and having surprisingly great footwork as well. He knew his strengths, and played to it. Should've played 30 mins a game, but didn't get the PT he deserved, and Raps suffered tremendously by playing Lou Williams over JJ, who consistently took horrible shots and was an absolute joke defensively.

2016 year
-Not as good. Was in a bit worse shape, perhaps demotivated due to consistent lack of PT. He also didn't drive/play the same post-up game as 2015. He spent lots more time on perimeter, taking lots of 3's, thinking he needed to do this in order to get PT. Even though he improved his 3 point shooting, he'll never be great 3 point shooter, and he was stupid in going away from his bread and butter (His post game, strength, footwork, and ability to bully his way to layups/dunks). He didn't get much PT in 2016, and this was more justified than 2015, as Raps had a better bench in 2016, and JJ's game got worse.

If he can get back in great shape, and can get back to attacking the hoop, using his post game etc., you guys will be shocked by how good JJ is and how good of a pickup he is. He literally could be the steal of 2016 free agency for 4 mill if he plays like that. However, if he doesn't get in good shape, if he chills on the perimeter, taking 3's, then meh, he won't be so effective for you guys.

He's a good dude, and I really want the best for him. Hope he plays to his strengths and consistently attacks the hoop.

JJ is a tremendous defender. Don't think he'll bring much to the table offensively but a gritty defender is always welcome in our team.

He's a violent finisher and runs floor well much like Derrick Williams. If Dragic gets the offense humming then we will see plenty of monster dunks from JJ and D Will on fast breaks. I think this is a very sneaky signing and adds solid depth to the bench.

I don't know much about this dude, & I know highlights only show the good parts of someone's game, but this guy goes to the hole hard. He seems to be able to spin both ways and doesn't look out of control coming off the spin like Hassan does at times. He looks like he's comfortable moving and cutting without the ball pretty good. Only problem is that Wade was our best passer by far off PnR's. Dragic has tunnel vision sometimes and holds onto the ball too long & misses the opportunity to make the inside pass.

I always thought he seemed kind of like a heat player. Kind of like Taj Gibson for the Bulls always seemed to me like a Pat Riley kind of player.

That's because he and Casey didn't see eye to eye. Casey hated Johnson for whatever reason. He seemed productive on the court, in the sense that he was rarely the reason you were yelling at the team. He' can't shoot, isn't a reliable ft shooter, but over all is a good strong player in spot minutes. Can defend multiple positions, runs the floor well, great finisher at the rim. Very good to even elite coordination and footwork. Has a second degree black belt in taikwondo.

I think what it comes down to is that he's got the Delonte West chromosome, where he comes across a bit unstable. He has been arrested for assaulting his girlfriend, so you wonder if he did something to get put into Casey's doghouse.
