Beasley is the equivalent of what Carmelo Anthony was in 2003 and Kevin Durant was last year. In either year, had we been in position to select either one of those guys, we would not have traded the pick.

I'm with you. All this trade talk just sucks. We're staring at the kid who just had one of the most impressive seasons in college history. The top picks like the Darkos, Marvin Williams etc... they were all drafted based on upside without a lot of actual accomplishment at the time. Bogut was a nice college player with great size but not really a flat out dominating presence in college either. For comparison Bogut put up 13 and 10 as a fresh (compared to Beasley's 26 and 12). Beasley is not like some of these other picks, he just owned college basketball as a freshman. Paxson looks like he might actually be dumb enough to pass on this guy... I'm just hoping Riley isn't losing his edge and going down the same path.

I'm in the same boat. I trust Riley with all the great choices he has made throughout the years, but then again it bothers me that he offered more then the minimum to Smush Parker and brought in Penny Hardaway. It doesn't take a genius to figure out those two deals shouldn't have been made let along give Smush a player option when it looked like he was headed to Europe. I just hope Riley makes the right decision to Beasley.

Heat resigns Alonzo Mourning, uses the MLE on Duhon and trades Wright and Banks for Pietrus (S&T)

Rotation
Bayless 24 mins 10 pts, 3 ast
Duhon 22 mins, 8 pts, 3 ast
Wade 38 mins, 26 pts, 8 ast
Miller 30 mins, 16 pts, 4 ast
Pietrus 26 mins, 8 pts, 4 rbs
Haslem 30 mins, 8 pts, 10 rbs
Brand 35 mins, 18 pts, 9 rbs
Collins 18 mins, 4 pts, 4 rbs
Mourning 13 mins, 4 pts, 2 blocks
I kind of like this. This would be a pretty complete freaking team.

I wonder if Riley could execute such a trade, looks to good to be true.

Penny was no risk low reward. That probably shouldn't go down as one of his bad moves. Smush was a bonehead decision from the beginning. He actually turned out even worse than I thought, and I had no expectations coming in.

My perfect draft would be drafting Beasley and getting an additional lottery or star player for Marion (like Brand or Baron Davis). By now with all the rumors out everyone in the organization would have talked to Riley about the talk of him passing over Beasley, and I just cant see them doing it.

Eh, Penny and Smush were low-risk gambles. I hated the Penny signing, but I thought Smush could work out. In fairness, he never got a shot.

Anyway, I don't trust Riley because he has a huge hard-on for veterans and no patience for young guys. However, I am hoping that the 2003-2004 season stays in his mind when he is thinking of passing on or trading Beasley.

I already put out the examples of teams who have built their core successfully, either mainly or fully, through the draft. We're one of them, San Antonio, Dallas, and New Orleans are the others. (Portland may be added to this list soon.)

I think the only trade you guys should do would be to trade down to 3 so you can get prospects + the pick from Minny. That way you can get Mayo, keep Marion, and build from there.

If Mayo gets drafted at 3.

Riley might still work a trade later on, for Bayless.

I think Riley expects Minny to take Mayo, and I think Bayless might become the second option, to trade Beasley.

I expect Rose one, Beasley two, Mayo 3, Bayless will be the one that Riles might target as plan B.

I don't want the Heat to trade a potential Brand type player for a 30 year old coming off surgery. Especially when there's the chance that the Heat could just sign him during the following off season and have both Beasley and Brand.

At this point Riley's most unexpected move would be to not trade the #2 pick and it would also be his best move.

HeatSince88 wrote:To me, it would be pretty dumb to make a "win-now" move by trading for Brand, while at the same time depending on a 19-year-old we draft at #7 to come in and the 3rd option on a "contending" team.
Those two concepts don't add up. We either have to go all in on winning now, or all in on rebuilding.

Like when the Celts traded for Ray Allen last year to go with their young core, pretty dumb move. Pierce, Allen and some young dudes were not gonna win a title. But then they went all in with the KG trade, and it made sense. Pierce/Allen/KG could indeed win a title.

So if it is Marion/2 for Brand/7 ... I'd like to see #7 repackaged to get us an impact veteran who can help Wade/Brand win a title in the small window they would have together.

In other words, either catapult us to true contender status with a Big 3 centered around Wade/Brand, or just take Beasley and look to add another lottery talent to insure our future. No half-measures Riley!
It has happened before with Tony Parker. The guy as a rookie started for a title team as the third option.

If we keep a veteran pointguard, behind him, I could see the Heat turning this team around fast.

Ford just says on ESPNews that he thinks they will take Beasley and he says Miami isn't getting enough to move down.
