I'd hesitate to trade one of the absolute best shooters in the league for a shooter coming out of college.

“He played under the rim a lot at Duke,” Carey said of his son. “Duke wanted him big [weight-wise] because college basketball is a lot of banging down low. Coach K wanted to use him that way.”

NBA teams wanted him to lose weight, and Carey said his son has done that, dropping from 260 to 237 since the season ended.

Carey Jr. is working out four times a week with renowned trainer Stan Remy, who has assisted Dwyane Wade, Jimmy Butler and many other NBA players.

“He’s continuing to work on his shooting; he wants to be really good at it,” Carey said of his son. “People don’t understand how good he can shoot. He can hit threes consistently. He came right out and hit two threes vs. Kansas in his first game and he’s a guy who can’t shoot? Coach K said, ‘We know you can shoot but we need you inside.’”

Carey said his son is also “working on lateral movement, the things people questioned.”

The Miami Heat, which has the 20th overall pick, interviewed Carey last week and then put him through an hour-long private workout the following day at a Miami gym. Carey said the Heat had his son go through several drills and he “shot well, ran well and passed well.”

Some may be pessimistic about his potential, but is he potentially better than any other big we have besides Bam? Most likely.

There's a lot to like from my perspective.

I really didn't see the fit, but the kid really changed his body. It makes a lot more sense now that we spent time on him.

Hard to tell how much quicker he got, but losing that much weight can change your movement. If the stories about the shooting are real...getting a big talented versatile kid next to Bam could be very useful.

Carey obviously has a lot of talent, he did have a monstrous freshman season. getting shredded in the covid break shows me he has some toughness in him.

I guess it depends on how much we liked what he showed when we practiced him.

My take is that he'd be at least KO on offense from a production standpoint, except he'd be able to score down low. Add in post defense, and rebounding, and he looks a lot better in my eyes.

God help the poor team that drafts this guy. "The guy I look at who I can be or who I can be better than is Dwyane Wade"

He's said this multiple times. Zach Lowe said there are teams around the league calling him taller Dion Waiters.

I think Vernon Carey Jr. is probably our pick if he's there. I would be shocked if we passed on him. Local kid with close ties to the Wade's. It's not like pulling any teeth to get Arison's and Battier to draft another Duke player either lol. We have a need for a big especially with Leonard leaving via free agency. Get VCJ in our program with Zo and UD and I think he flourishes. One more year at Duke and we are probably looking at him as a top 5 pick. Still not opposed to trading for LMA so that VCJ can sit and learn from him.

QUIZ-Agree. How many all time greats came out so cocky after playing mediocre ball and actually became someone. He actually has fallen short every step of the way. Most recently against Maxey in their workout. Maxey looked great.

MWP- Agree. Vernon is a quality addition. If he goes 2nd round we should definitely jump. I wonder if we trade 20 and try to get a couple 2nd rounders instead. Cap flex.

Lol why be mad that a kid has high expectations for himself. His game thou is not similar to Wade and even further away from Waiters. He is in that Bonzi Wells and Jimmy Butler type of player with more explosion.

Because reports are that he’s fat and has no motor? I’m not hating on him, he just seems like he has irrational confidence but in the worst entitled sort of way.

Would be kinda weird to draft a player named after Buffalo Bill's dog but if he can play, he can play

Don't know.

They're interviewed some of the Kentucky guards but not sure if they worked any of them out.

I wonder if those 10 workouts are for private workouts in Miami. Not workouts held by the player where teams have to come to them

Maybe if he rubs the lotion on his skin, and does what he's told, he'll develop into a legit big :)

But srs I'd be very happy with Achiuwa. You can tell he'll have a role as a high energy big at minimum. Dude plays hard and is 6'9" with a 7'2.5" wingspan.

If he can make the leap with his jump shot to being legit, teams would have a handful with him coming in when Bam rests. He could also play alongside Bam if the J comes around due to his ability to guard the switch and protect the paint.

Trying not to get my hopes up on Draft night as my gut instinct tells me we're dealing the pick, but there's plenty of comparable talent on the board between picks 15-40 really. If we DO decide to trade our first for some seconds, it could work out reasonably well for us.

If I had to rank all the prospects the Heat seem to be interested in/could fall to 20...

1.Kira Lewis Jr.
2.Aaron Nesmith
3.Tyrell Terry
4.Immanuel Quickley
5.Tyrese Maxey
6.Desmond Bane
7.Jaden McDaniels
8.Precious Achuiwa
9.Jalen Smith
10.Vernon Carey Jr.
11.Daniel Oturu
12.Grant Riller
13.Zeke Nnaji
14.Malachi Flynn
15.Tre Jones
16.Nico Mannion
17.Cole Anthony

Prospects 1-8 I like.

Also, an update on the consensus Mock Drafts around a week out from Draft night:

CBSSports: Tre Jones, Duke, PG
Tankathon: Tyrese Maxey, Kentucky, SG
NBADraftroom: Tyrell Terry, Stanford, PG
NBADraft.net: Desmond Bane, TCU, SG
The Ringer: Jalen Smith, Maryland, PF/C
USAToday: Aleksej Pokusevski, Olympiacos, PF
NBCSports: Zeke Nnaji, Arizona, PF
Fox Sports: Theo Maledon, France, PG

Ironically, there is no consensus . Going to be a wild draft.

Rightly or wrongly, we just don't appear interested in international prospects at all.

I think Miami's philosophy these days seems to be big school, local and we're comfortable taking Freshman too.

I'm liking us looking at Achiuwa or Nesmith. They appear to be the two guys who are late lotto but could also fall through to 20 too. Either one of those guys would be excellent choices at #20 IMO. Clear roles for each of them in our team.

I'm convinced 20 is gone. We have to be buying into the early 2nd round. This is the perfect year for that tbh. I'm so eager for this offseason to take off. Blue balls buddy.
