So many Heat fans alternate between whining about not giving up everything for old players vs not having any assets because they gave some away for someone's old players

Just go play fantasy basketball. Be commissioner of your own league. You can make trades every day to your heart's desire then undo the ones that turn out like crap.

Opening lineup prediction:

Lowry, Herro, Butler, Martin, Bam

Bench: Love (for Martin), Dru Smith (for Lowry though Herro will play at pg a lot too), Duncan Robinson, Jovic, Jaquez, Bryant (for Bam), Orlando Robinson
Richardson - feet
Highsmith - knee
Hampton, Cain, and Swider won't burn one of their 50 days.

The team is very deep. Stiff competition for minutes. Looking forward to seeing Herro getting LOTS of minutes. We'll have somee great rotations too. Herro, Duncan Robinson, Jaquez, Jovic, & Orlando Robinson would be super high energy.

So this thing about him ultimately choosing Phoenix was a lie, you mean we just said to him nah, pass!!! a bird in hand Id say, we could of had him for Lowry, and pick, been fielding Beal, Herro, Jimmy, Caleb, Bam lineups..... :o

Ya'll are reading too much into the comments.

Of course Pat Riley is going to say "we have enough". He'll never publicly come out and say "we don't think we have enough and we tried to get more but failed in doing so this summer".

I do believe him when he says they did not want to trade the farm for Lillard; farm being ALL of Herro, Caleb, FRPs, JJJ, Jovic, etc. I think there was a sub-sample of that farm included within the proposal (i.e. Herro, Jovic, FRP) but that's as far as we were willing to offer.

Isn't the story that they wanted him to give up his no trade clause and he refused? "Eventually miami said they just can't do it". Eventually after what? After he refused to remove his NTC?

There seems to be missing context from his side of the story in that piece.

Those Beal comments are making me feel like it's not Pat. It's Arison saying no he won't pay X amount of money or give up X amount in assets.

Now the old man is asking for Bam or Herro to be 25 PPG scorers when he had a multiple time 30 PPG scorer begging to come here for peanuts :o

Herro is a better player than Beal. Pat's not stupid. Move on.

Would have loved Beal in Miami. Sucks because it really seems like it would have been possible to pull that off while also keeping Herro.

Nah, I’m #1 person that wants Pat to retire already but this wasn’t on him. It’s clear Pat went to Micky, and Micky didn’t sign off. Cheap bastard doesn’t get enough flak for being a very cheap owner. Don’t forget we had LBJ Wade and Bosh and he decided it was ok to amnesty Mike Miller to save a couple bucks. He didn’t want to pay D Wade his legacy contract. Guy is a sh*t owner plain an simple. We didn’t get Beal because he didn’t want to pay up that tax, simple as that. Beal literally came out and said it. No denying this.

Now I’m starting to wonder if we missed on Dame cuz he was trying to offload all our terrible contracts on them as well. Probably wanted them to take D Rob, Lowry etc lol guys a joke, and his cruise line is trash

No, I think it's a little more complicated than that. At this point we're talking about ownership having to accept taking on that long term contract and expecting to be in the tax for possibly 4 years and this is where the talk of NTC and not being worth 30 million more than Herro comes in because value wise(because it's really 30 million more than Herro and the tax bill), you can't keep Herro at that number with Beal so Herro would be gone for whatever they could get for him which we all found out isn't much. The NTC stops Miami from being able to trade Beal's contract to get out of the tax 2-3 years down the road, so with the NTC you're potentially talking about moving Butler or Bam's contract to get out of the tax and I highly doubt either will be moved although Embiid possibly becoming available could make Bam possibly available. Bam would only be considered to be moved for probably only 2 players (Jokic or Embiid... younger player for better older player); Butler of course could be traded but with his age the players it would require probably will never be available for Butler, he's the older player being traded for a lesser younger player.

Basically, I think this all comes down to ownership saying no to possibly 3-4 years in the tax with a much better team vs what they currently have/trading for Lillard in a Herro package and letting Lowry expire giving the Heat just one year in the tax. Like the FO has said, management will go into the tax for a star, so either they don't see Butler as a star or it's meant they will only go into the tax to acquire a star. Pat's taking the anger from the fans, but it may not be his fault at all, the FO has to play within the rules of ownership.

Some of this is very predictable, what's not predictable is what the owner will accept in trades to go and possibly stay in the tax and it may actually be nobody to be in the tax 2+ years. That's the amount of tax and extra salary you're paying and also not getting that 10+ million dollar check from the NBA for not being in the tax.
