São Paulo is a very bad team now. We have to rely on our determination to win, because there isn't a huge amount of talent on the team. The best teams we've had were a happy mixture of both. Honestly, I was shocked we beat River Plate, but having 75000 screaming fans at home makes a difference. We play The Strongest away (in Bolivia on top of the world) on 4/21. Before that we have a game on 4/17 that will determine whether we progress in the less important state championship. It is against a crappy team from the interior, but it will be a challenge and I wonder whether we should even play our best players with potential for injury etc before such an important game vs The Strongest. We won't win the state championship. We haven't beaten a single one of our rivals Corinthians, Palmeiras, Santos... Not even Portuguesa or Ponte Preta. We are garbage this year.
Everything changes if we beat The Strongest though. If that happens we'll be together with 16 teams in the 2nd round of the Libertadores, 8 games away from being heroes. Libertadores is the South American version of the Champions League. The best teams of all the nations play amongst themselves and the toughest gets through. It really makes for some ugly games because Europeans are not half as violent as South American players. You can see from the video I posted how no one shies from getting a red card. Actually there are players on the team for that specific purpose, sort of like Haslem, but a lot nastier.
Barcelona is incredibly talented. Neymar, Messi, Suarez, Mascherano, Busquets... A brilliant team, but they played poor defense. The first goal nobody marked Griezmann. He was standing wide open between 2 Barcelona defenders in the 6 yard box. In the play of the penalty, it was another defensive breakdown, a 3 on 2. Absolute desperation.
If you compare the play to last month's game against Arsenal (with Neymar, Suarez, and Messi all scoring), you can see what happened. Playing a tough schedule of Champion's League and the Spanish BBVA, Copa del Rey, et cetera, Barcelona just looked completely exhausted. I think Atletico deserved the win though. Griezmann is very good, Koke is a smooth orchestrator of the midfield who passes the ball wherever he wants... Barcelona is going to need to get better. They cannot improve their attack, but I'd expect to see some reinforcement in the defense. Mascherano, especially, is past his prime.
