Mars wrote:“I remember when I was coaching back in L.A.,” Riley said of his time with the Lakers. “Jerry West called me on the phone and he said, ‘I want you to come over to Loyola. I’m going to be working out a player,’ you know, back in the ’80s. He didn’t tell me who it was. I went over there and it was an 18-year-old high school kid by the name of Shawn Kemp.
“When I saw [Adebayo] in our gym here, I leaned over to Chet [Kammerer] and I said, ‘He reminds me of Shawn Kemp.’ At least physically and the mature, already developed athletic body for professional basketball. So that was a comparison and we all know what kind of career he had.”

I thought Zion Willamson was the second coming to Kemp. But I guess Riley wants to mold him into Kemp? Maybe Zion is STAT?

Re: Official "Damn Bam" Adebayo thread
Bam doesn't get up like Kemp did. He's more Howardesque. None of those stupid "throw-in" faux dunks, though.
Here's the press conference.
At around the 10:45 mark, Bam mentions that he's got another TWO YEARS left of physical growth, meaning that body of his isn't fully done growing. THAT SCARES THE **** OUT OF ME.
In two years, we could see a 6'11, 275 lb athletic FREAK in Bam Adebayo starting alongside Whiteside. The league is on notice.

In terms of pure explosive leaping ability, not even Kemp was Howardesque. If we have to "settle" for Bam getting up like prime Dwight once did, we're going to be just fine…

EDIT: He was also 3rd in total points added.
Interesting stuff. Pardon my ignorance, but can you tell us what that means? What do each of "points saved" and "total points added" measure?
This page would explain it better than me.

Thanks for highlighting this. Super impressive stuff. He and Josh Jackson had the most balanced offensive and defensive positive impact of all freshman in college basketball -- Lonzo Ball was #1 overall in TPA, but it was all due to his unbelievable offensive impact.
Pair this with his clear upside (due to his athleticism and hopefully improving jump shot), and I'm now even more excited about the pickup

Here's some local hype.
Yeah, he's not doing double pump reverses or windmills in traffic. I think he's a two-foot leaper, like d12.

Re: Official "Damn Bam" Adebayo thread
Bam grew up right down the road from where I did. I'm really happy he was drafted by a good organization. I just wish he wasn't in the same division as us.
And I don't think you reached for him. If we had not traded for Dwight Howard the rumor was that we were going to target him in the draft. The Bucks really wanted him as well, so 17 was his floor. As usual the media pundits think they know more than actual professionals working for NBA teams.
I'm glad you guys got him, he's going to a be damn good player in this league for a long time.

Re: Official "Damn Bam" Adebayo thread
Found a couple more players who had a higher ftr(free-throw rate) than Adebayo. Nigel Hayes had an ftr of .854 his 1st year at Wisconsin but averaged an ftr of .604 his 4 years at Wisconsin. Went undrafted this year and will now play for the Knicks' SL team.
The next ftr I found is the most ridiculous I've seen. You might've heard of this player. Jimmy Butler had an ftr of 1.047 his 1st year at Marquette. Averaged an ftr of .776 his 3 years there.

Re: Official "Damn Bam" Adebayo thread
The Bam and Kemp comparison, they are different in that Kemp had so much balance and body control. Don't think Bam has the handle or body control. Kemp had handles to weave thru traffic.

I'm really curious to see whether Bam actually has a jumper. Workout footage is one thing, but lets see how he does in SL.
