And here I thought that one of the Celtics problems was a giant hole in the middle.

I'm starting to think that Pat Riley just doesn't handle rejection well.

We just gave $12.5 million a year to a guy who spent the past 2 years splitting time with Jared Sullinger, Amir Johnson, Jonas Jerebko, David Lee, and Tyler Zeller.

We have a bench guy making 8 figures a year, and among the top 100 paid players in the NBA.

We landed our whale!

Or Olynyk. Either way, we're spending like a drunk sailor. If reports are correct, we've got half the salary cap ... $50 million ... tied up in Whiteside/JJ/Olynyk ... and not an all star appearance between them.

And you get a 4 year contract, and you get a 4 year contract, and you get a 4 year contract!

This is nuts!

He's no whale, but for arguments sake it's only 11% of our salary cap... It's hardly the worst deal in the NBA, the guys 26 been a consistent role player through his first 4 years averaging 9.5ppg in 20.7mins on 7.5 shots per game. Also per 36mins he's averaging 15.9ppg/8.4rpg/3.5apg which isn't too bad for a C like Olynyk.

For what talent we already have we don't need much output from Olynyk. I also think he'll be in better shape with Miami which could improve some of his short comings and overall play. But a 3pt shooting (36.8% career average) big guy we can slot at the Center position in short spurts to open up the floor for guys like Dragic/Waiters/TJ/JJ/Winslow's driving to the hoop. I also think he's an upgrade over Babbit at the PF spot if need be.

Miami used their cap wisely

There is no future cap. Even without TJ you will have to trade other players to get under the cap. Consider we are going to be over the cap by more than TJ's salary this season and that our players are on long-term contracts (Whiteside/Dragic/James Johnson/Olynyk/Waiters/etc) How will you get below cap enough to sign another player? It isn't going up by 15M a year anymore.

Assuming we can convince Richardson to take the extension. Also, we need to deal with White and Hammon's early bird situation:

Image

We will probably have to make a deal with Winslow. Let's hope we will have to pay him a lot because he has a great season.

Now let's go one step further.

Right now the salary cap is expected to rise all the way to $102M next season. Let's say we can dump TJ's contract without taking on any money. Before adding slots for required roster positions, we would have just $1,181,264 to hunt whales. Once you add the required amounts (minimum 0-year salaries), we are actually over the cap by $3M.

Image

Next season, however, we will have a full non-taxpayer MLE of almost $9M. That's something, right?

The 2020 season will be interesting. This is who we'll have under contract (age):

Whiteside (30) $27.1
Dragic (33) $19.2
TJ (26) $19.6
JJ (32) $15.3
Dion (27) $13.3
Olynyk (28) $12.8
Bam (21) $3.5
*Assume Winslow (23) will be retained as a RFA

It'll be the core's 4th season together and most of these guys will be in their primes. There's something to be said for continuity and certainty. In this climate of constant player movement and roster upheaval we have a core intact and locked up that has nothing to focus on but winning as a team. Where will today's superteams be in 2020? Where will Boston be (33yo Horford and 29yo Hayward BY THEMSELVES will be accounting for $62.8M)? And just imagine if Winslow and Bam develop into something...

I wouldn't call 50/4 for Olynyk a bargain. It's a little overpay, tbh.

A little shocked that virtually every starting lineup projection here still has Winslow starting, despite the fact that our chemistry was crap and only Brooklyn was worst than us the last time we forced him into a starting role. For his sake and the team's sake, I pray that we actually make him earn his minutes for a change....1st 2 seasons were an excuse-a-thon for him and I predict the same thing is gonna happen this yr..."hasn't shot the ball for a year"..."just coming off a serious injury"...yada yada yada.

Starting.........2nd unit
C Hassan.....Bam/Olynyk
PF Olynyk......J.J./Bam
SF J.J. ..........Winslow
SG Dion........JRich
PG Dragic......TJ

Um... how did McGruder lose the SF position in your lineup? He was very effective:

My starters: Dragic/Dion/McGruder/James Johnson/Hassan
Bench: Tyler/Richardson/Winslow/Bam/Olynyk/White/Haslem

Babbitt? Ellington?
