Ja is a small guard that makes his living off of using his athleticism to finish at the rim among the trees in impossible ways. This archetype is specifically prone to not having a long shelf-life.
In his entire NBA career, Ja has been available to play for 63% of his total games (319 of 506). In the past 3 complete seasons, Ja has been available to play for 49% of his total games (120 of 246). This season, Ja has been available to play in 50% of his total games.
Last season, Memphis under Taylor Jenkins implemented the closest thing to this season's Heat offense that the NBA has ever seen. Apparently Ja HATED it and was one of the driving forces in getting Taylor Jenkins fired. Taylor Jenkins was fired on March 28, 2025.
From the start of last season to March 28, 2025, Memphis was 44-29 (4 seed in the West) with the 4th best net rating in the NBA (+5.1), the 6th best ORTG in the NBA (117.4), and the 11th best DRTG (112.4).
Post firing, Memphis went 4-5 and had the 18th best net rating in the NBA (+1.4; 115.5 ORTG; 114.1 DRTG). Memphis got swept in round 1 of the playoffs. Ja was unavailable for 1 of those 4 games with injury. He averaged 18 and 5 in the 3 games he played.
This season Ja is averaging 17.9 ppg, 7.6 apg to 3.8 topg (2:1 ato ratio) while shooting 36% from the field and 17% from 3. Ja has always been a below average 3pt shooter.
This season Memphis has a losing record (11-13) with the 18th ranked net rating in the NBA (-1.9). Their ORTG is 25th (111.5) and their DRTG is 12th (113.4).
Ja is NOT worth trading most of the team for. I'll take him at a bargain price as a lotto shot.
