Again, assuming we signed absolutely no one long term. The chance at 1 max player. Throw away 2 seasons for the chance at Lebron or Bosh? Eh...

This is the same path I've been going on as time has gone by. Although I think there will be a legitimate shot at Bosh, I think everyone except maybe New York (and maybe Brooklyn) is kidding themselves about LeBron. The guy has (and probably deservedly so) a huge ego. Talking in third person, having 'the cosen one' tattooed on his back and referring to himself as King James, I mean, the guy knows he is the man. If him and Wade have a wink wink to join the same team in 2010, then I see Wade being a Cav before James being on Miami.

I want everything to be in place for getting ALL THREE of those guys in the summer of 2010, Bosh, James and Wade, who I think could all play as well, if not better, chemistry-wise as the Celtics with Allen, Garnett and Pierce.

-solid framework in place: maybe Cook or Wright, No. 2 pick, Haslem, maybe one other player by then and a winning attitude (making noise in the playoffs the next couple of years)
-at least a 60+ mil cap space (it is 55 mil or so right now).
-the Celtics with their powerful triumverative to do very well and show the younger players in the league that teaming up can be very special. Imagine if they had done it in their mid-20s.
-trade Banks for a player whose contract ends by 2010
-a player-friendly Pat Riley disciple, which we have in Spoelstra

Roster with 2010 salaries and a 60 mil salary cap

Beasley or Rose...5 mil, in final year of rookie contract
Haslem...6.5 mil, first year in a new contract
Wade...16.75 mil
LeBron...16.75 mil
Bosh...16.75 mil
Veteran pg...minimum deal
Veteran pf/c...minimum deal
Veteran g/f...minimum deal

and there are the 2011, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 NBA Champs!

In 2010 Wade is opting out to get a raise, probably in the 18-20 million range. Are we going to have enough space to bring say LBJ or Bosh at around that amount and STILL have room to fill out the rest of the roster?

Veterans with 7-9 years experience are allowed a max contract limited to 30% of the cap (it's actually a bit lower than 30% because it's calculated a bit different). All of our current salaries expire after the 2009 season except Banks who has one more year (we can easily trade him in the next 2 years for a contract that expires in 2009).

Beasley/Rose will count for about $4.9MM in 2010. So IF we don't sign anyone beyond 2010 we actually would have enough space to offer 3 max contracts. The rest of the team would need to be minimum salary players. However we would have 4 superstars and the ability to use the midlevel and lower exceptions the following summer to fill out the depth.

Remember that Amare Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler can also opt out that season. So we could get 2 of Amare, Bosh, Bron. Lebron will probably stay in Cleveland but Amare will be happy to leave (Nash will be old and the nucleus of the team will be gone).

Of note, that year T-Mac and Dirk can also opt out but their max contracts would be more expensive because they have more experience so they can get 35% of the cap. Plus the negative is that they are older.

Personally I would like to see us sign Calderon if we don't get Rose. However, my biggest issue would be that we have a team option for the 2010 season. I would do that with any contract we sign; make sure it has a team option for the 2010 season. That way going into the summer of 2010 we are free to evaluate our options. If we can get an agreement that 2 of the young superstars besides Wade are willing to come here then you go ahead and not exercise the team option and just sign Wade and the 2 other max superstars (Rose/Beasley would already be on the books for about $4.9MM) and then worry about depth later.

If you can only get one of the superstars to agree to come here then you exersice the team option and keep some of our current players to fill out the team. Remember that we can also use some of that cap space that summer to help another team that's over the cap get a guy they want, and get a heck of alot back in trade.

I doubt any free agent worth giving a contract like Calderon takes a team option after only the second year of the contract.

You're probably right.

I would love to keep the flexibility to sign 3 max guys in 2010 to go with Rose/Beasley. Wade/Bron/Amare? Wade/Amare/Bosh?

Realistically it will be difficult to get any of the max guys in 2010 let alone 2 of them (I'm just assuming we have no problem signing Wade because I'm not even willing to think about any possibility of losing him). There will be a TON of teams with the cap space to offer max deals so it will be very competitive.

It's probably best to go ahead and fill some of the spots and leave enough room for just 1 max guy in addition to Wade.

^Yeah, take Rose or Beasely, and then keep your options open for 2010.

Say they dealt 2 for Melo

Wade-Melo-Bosh

It'd be like flipping the bird to Detroit for the next 10 years
