For one, Odom and Beasley being tweeners allows them to switch positions on both offense and defense, depending on matchups and what sets we want to run. Odom may not have three-point range, but Beasley sure does. I know Odom is the better defender, but can he defend SFs well?
Second, lets compare Odom at the three to Marion at the three, both arguably out of position.
Odom - Weak three-point shooting, Strong shot-creating ability from the perimeter, Strong ball-handling/facilitating ability particularly for size, Solid mid-range game, Strong rebounding, Questionable defense at SF
Marion - Weak three-point shooting (though slightly better somehow), Weak shot-creating ability from the perimeter, Weak ball-handling though decent facilitating ability, No mid-range game, Strong rebounding, Strong defense
Obviously this doesn't take into account many of Marion's intangibles, but there is almost no question that Odom is better at SF than Marion despite Marion being the better player.
