If I were Blazers... hmm. maybe if I could bring in Seth with him? Ben is still only 24, he's not done yet.
I'd play Ben as a big and ask him to rebound the hell out of the ball. Have a quota of 15 shots a game within 10 feet. His shots per game have decreased every year.
On the flip side, he's an absolutely impressive defender. He's somewhere around 6'10", legit, with long arms, and can guard anyone.
You've got to overcompensate with him I think. Make him your go to scorer in every offseason workout, practice, preseason game, etc. He's too willing to play the role player.
I really don't get the "just play Simmons at C" thinking.
What's the point? has he ever been an elite rebounder/shot blocker/finisher? Why not just get a regular old-school C that can hit FT at double the %, be bigger then Ben and make 20% of his salary?
The all point of having a 6"10 Simmons is that he has a great handle, passing and driving. You put him as a C he'll just look worse.
Bam and Dedmon would eat him alive.
It's mostly about how to utilize Simmons offensively in the halfcourt, basically putting him in Bam's role the last 2 years. On defense either you're switching everything(if you can get a lot of big SFs) or you get a stretch big who can guard centers to pair up with him.
Simmons hasn't tried enough to get a jumper, his statement after being knocked out of the playoffs again indicates he has no real thoughts of putting in the work to try to fix his shot so you just have to treat him as a non shooting big in the halfcourt.
Pop is possibly the only coach that could play mind games with Simmons to get him to want to put in the work to become a better shooter. Possibly "fixing" Simmons would be an great way for Pop to end his HOF career.
