You can do it, but it will take some time. If you have CS5 you can right click and save the gif as a .gif and then open it in Photoshop. Make sure you have the "Animation" window open (it's like the layers/swatches/history etc windows in PS). If it does not show you the frames, click on the button that is in one of the corners of that animation window that looks like a bunch of squares in a row. You should now see every frame in the gif and the duration of each. I'd recommend pruning out every other frame for something like this and upping the duration of each slightly (otherwise you'll have a lot of work ahead of you). You'll then have to go through one frame at a time and crop the background out of the layer that is visible for that frame. If you have any more questions (and I'm assuming you will because my explanation is mediocre at best), make a thread on the G&D board and I'll try to help you out a bit more.
