Bosh said the Heat spent the past few days in film sessions and workouts showing Whiteside how to defend on the perimeter and how to get back into the paint.

That's what I want to hear. Whiteside already has all of the physical tools. Now it's just about tying it all together. Anchoring an NBA defense is not a simple task.

Once again though, slowly but surely Whiteside is getting better game after game.

QUIZ wrote:So you're ok with losing Whiteside because of the small chance we'd have at signing Durant or DeRozen?

I thought I made it clear that if we're getting Cousin, Wade back and a chance to get KD or DeRozan. So then, I agree losing Whiteside even with a small chance of signing KD or DeRozan coz we have Cousin. Just like I said above, I agree to trade him but with qualifications, otherwise stick with him and hope he sign's back close to Tristan Thompson or Draymond Green's contract.

That just doesn't make any sense to me. We're not getting any major assets for Whiteside. His lack of bird rights basically makes his trade value next to nothing.
Thats really one of my worries. That is why if given the opportunity to have a good deal like getting Cousin, you grab it... My other worries is, if he resigns and takes a lot of the Heat cap space that will impede the progress of the team. I will say it again, this current team will not beat the Cavs. Heat need to add a free agent like KD.

So if we don't resign him we will be losing him for nothing.
That is a big possibility.. like you said, Miami doesn't have full bird rights. Even though Heat has cap space, he can choose to sign elsewhere he likes.

The thinks that is good next summer, the free agent situation is loaded at center. So its a matter of priorities..
Do you max Whiteside instead of Durant, if given the opportunities???

If u don't want 2b here, the way things work, u don't like it, then don't b here. U have 2 stand on something. If Miami ain't standing on something, they become alot of these organizations trying 2 find their identity. This is the culture, bro -Wade

Miami Heat’s Hassan Whiteside sees more time in fourth quarter

Manny Navarro | Miami Herald
December 20, 2015

MIAMI -- Hassan Whiteside has played so infrequently in the fourth quarter this season that he actually took joy Sunday when the Portland Trail Blazers tried to intentionally foul him during the period.

“It had been a while,” Whiteside said through a smile. “I was relaxed.”

Whiteside buried the free throws with 2:40 remaining and Blazers coach Terry Stotts opted not to go to the tactic again. In the end, that was probably the only disappointing part of the fourth quarter for Whiteside.

The rest was pretty cool — because he got to play and be a big part of the Heat’s 116-109 comeback win over Portland. Of his 22 points and 11 rebounds, he recored 10 and six, respectively, in the final period.

When it comes to playing the fourth quarter on most nights, Miami’s starting center usually ends up on the bench as the Heat goes smaller to deal with quicker opposing lineups…

…Whiteside called it a “great feeling” just being able to contribute in the fourth quarter and that he didn’t realize how long he had been out there until he looked up and saw it on the monitor. He played a season-high 37 minutes 38 seconds.

So why did coach Erik Spoelstra decide to leave his big man in for meaningful minutes when he hadn’t through the Heat’s first 25 games?

Spoelstra didn’t want to make a big deal of it when pressed and said ultimately he goes with “whatever is best for the team” in the fourth quarter.

“Hassan was terrific in the second half defensively,” Spoelstra said. “That's why I played him the entire second half. He was making so many plays — a lot of them that you saw, the blocks, the rebounds. But a lot you probably wouldn't see — the pick and roll coverages against dynamic three-point shooters. He was really covering a lot of ground. Probably, arguably, as much ground as he’s covered in a game defensively was [Sunday].”…

…Whiteside said he was playing a little differently defensively Sunday than he had been earlier in the season — namely playing up and further away from the basket on Portland’s perimeter shooters. He’s also said he’s trusting his teammates more to protect the weakside of the basket.

“I had to step out,” Whiteside said. “And I’m fine with that. Just stay around the three-point line and my teammates had my back. It’s just something I’m going to have to deal with. It’s not like the old days where bigs can just stay in the paint and just block a ton of shots.

“Those guys can get hot real early. So, I just had to step up on the screens. I felt like last game I didn’t step out enough. This time I told them I could do it. I told them just let me know if I need to step out on the pick and roll. I can do that."

Whiteside drew his second technical foul of the season at the end of the third quarter after he swatted a pair of shots back to back and then slammed the basketball in celebration once time expired.

“I just got too excited,” he said.

He was in good spirits after the game so he wasn’t be too upset about being hit with the $2,000 fine that comes with the technical.

“I just bought a MacBook,” he joked. “I just bought an Apple computer for bouncing a ball too hard. My bad. I know I messed up. [$2,000] — that’s how much an Apple computer costs.”

I hope he never changes off the court. His straightforward talk in interviews is really refreshing.

On the court, I'm glad to see that the Heat are developing him. I was worried Spo was just giving up on him, but it seems like they're going to try and get him to change defensively so that they can more effectively play him and Bosh together.

It's hard to remember his NBA experience is still so low, so he really has a lot that he can learn in the next year or two, that could take him to the next level.

Hassan Whiteside takes the extra steps to finish the game for Heat

Good piece from Wallace. It's good to know Whiteside is making that extra effort on the defensive end. If he can be more effective against the pnr, and close out on shooters more aggressively, he can expect his late game minutes to increase. I got no problem with that. I just want the team to be better. Maybe this old dog can learn some new tricks. After all, he made such an effort on his conditioning, it's time to showcase it with the extra effort.

Here's hoping for continued growth on both ends of the floor. Let's get him passing the rock more now.

If Whiteside starts playing the PnR properly like he did during the second half. He will be worth close to if not the Max and may win defensive player of the year. On top of that we will be able to truly compete with the top teams in the NBA!!

I view Whiteside as a 2nd year man with last year being his rookie season. Yes, he poked around alot in China, Lebanon, and the D-League, but real NBA coaching he hasn't had. Now he is and we'll see a lot of the aspects of his game improve. I think next year we'll see his jump shot improve and his range. If he puts in the effort, why shouldn't it?

Those type of plays happen more often when you are fully engaged in the game. And that's not exclusive to Hassan.

Said Carlesimo: "I'll piggy-back that. I had radio last year for Miami-Cleveland on Christmas. I remember vividly practice on the 24th, Spo said to me and this was kind of before Hassan [blew up], he said 'He's going to be a player for us. He's going to be an impact player. We like what he's shown in practice on a regular basis. He's going to surprise people.' That was really before he kind of burst on the scene and done the things he's done. Spo deserves tremendous credit."

I mean even we saw it before he broke out. I remember one of his first games where he got to play a few minutes vs the Wizards and instantly his presence was felt. Wall and Beal stopped driving to the rim. A few games later he saw that he had great hands to go along with his size and length. He was still raw and was constantly fouling people but we saw the things that he could do which were unteachable.

Hassan played great in what was unfortunately a losing effort. He came out ready to play straight from the tip and was awesome on both ends.

He looked like a guy that I would love to give the max to.

I'm still hoping Riley can get some 2-year contract, with a PO on the second (like LeBron got), so we can add a big piece this year & he can resign for a lot more in 2017 (including bigger raises).

But I do think someone will throw a max at him.

It'd make no sense for him. Why turn down guaranteed 4yr $94mill for a 2 year MLE deal where anything can go wrong causing his stock to plummet. Any money he'd gain by resigning under an even higher cap would be negated because he took a $15mill pay cut in 2016 to wait it out.

It'd be all risk zero reward.

In LeBron's case he gets to keep his foot on the Cavs throat while waiting to sign a $200mill deal in 2017.
